26 Nosler... why?

Just saw that Nosler is pushing their 26 Nosler. Take the overbore 6.5-284 and add half an inch to make it even more overbore. Next to the 6.5WSM, what's the point of this barrel burner (besides selling more barrels) ?

Making longer range hunting as idiot proof as possible. Take a long heavy for caliber high BC hunting bullet and push it really really fast so that you can hold dead on and have a reasonable chance of taking game even in slight winds.

It's not like there aren't loads of those already
6.5-'06
6.5-284
6.5 SAUM
6.5 WSM
7WSM
50BMG

It's a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Okay, "what else is new".

That is it.

Why? Because they can, that is all the reason they need. People said there was no reason for the 300WSM, but look at how successful it has turned out. On the other hand people also said there was no reason for the RSAUM line, and they were right

The 7RSAUM seems to outshoot the 7 WSM. In benchrest the 7WSM never has worked out but it seems the 7 RSAUM is more accurate. If you want a long range hunting gun I wouldn't pick a 6.5 caliber. The wash disappears way before a 30 or 338 caliber. It also will not buck the wind like a high BC 7mm, 30 or 338 bullet will. Matt

I Did a heap of reading on the "26 NOS" recently. And, I seem to completely agree, Why?
The (ballistic) variations from the 264 WM and several cartridges listed above render the 26 Nosler, all but pointless to folks like us.
I mean really, for what is to be a hunting cartridge. I just "don't get it"!

However, (my favorite word) what I do get, is the understanding that Nosler, who makes a fine hunting (projectile) is wanting to "tap in" to the larger market. And hey, that's great, more power to em'.

As when Remington came out with the 280 Mountain rifle, it soared through the roof in sales. Every deer club had 2-3 guys, run out and buy one. Meanwhile, that lonely 7mm express, just sat on the shelf feeling depressed and lonesome. Why? Because the 280 killed em' MORE dead.

It's all about MARKETING! Guys like us, i/e: Shooters, i/e: on this forum kinda folks, don't fall for it.
Nosler knows that by targeting (no pun) "Bubba", he will truly believe, that having this 26 will not only make him the envy of all his buds, but his conscience level of thinking has risen to a level that says,
"My 270 was great, but NOW, I can really put a whoopin on em!" And that's exactly what they want him to buy into. Its not Bubba's fault, he doesn't know any better. No differently than a diet coke with cheese pizza will help you loose weight, than with a regular coke. (seriously)

Either way, Nosler has undergone some great changes in the last few years. And I truly hope its for the best.
For my bigger game shoots, I still swear by Partitions. But, that's just what works for me. Like Fred said, "dead is dead!"

God Bless America,
Scotsman1

I got a chuckle when I seen they had advertised it using 130's lol... I wonder if their using a nosler 130 that has their bloated Bc's to go along with the rest lol

Good post Scotsman1 and stool. I think it will be a tougher sell now then 20 years ago. With all the internet and magazines that taught and educated people. Most know that a 264 WIN Mag. ate barrels to the point that Winchester even went to stainless to try and sell them. I Just think it is going to be a tough sell because of all the good cartridges available. Now you have shows on TV showing you can click and shoot. You have sites like longrange hunting and guys are learning to shoot far. I just think it might be a tuff sell now. For the same price you can buy a 7LRM off the Davidson Bros. and see what the gun did on TV and the internet. Matt

I just think its funny how they are advertising it as a " new breakthrough" in cartridges. As if those speeds havent been seen in other wildcats already like the 6.5-300 wby or the 6.5 STW. its just another powder wasting overbore barrel burner to add to the pile.

That's why I think it is going to be a hard sell. People know more now then they did 20 or 40years ago. When Alex Hoyer developed the 6.5-300 wby he sold a lot of them around here. We had the longrange hunters plus the Williamsport 1000 yard range. The two biggest problems were barrels lasting and on good days the wash was lost right at about 1100 yards. When you can't see the wash or impact it gets hard to kill things. Along came the 7-300, a little better and then the 30-378 which was also a little better. Now the 338's rule for extreme distance. The 26 Nosler is what it is ,nothing more nothing less. If it wasn't for variety we'd still be shooting squirrels and all the other 4 legged animals with .38 cal round balls and the Punt gun for waterfowl. I mean really who needs more than a 22rf and a 30-30 anyway... just saying

Did I mention my plans for my 6.5-50BMG wildcat? Or my 22-338 Lapua?
Maybe Nosler can standardize that and that next!
26 Nosler is the most ridiculous concoction I've ever seen. An ugly cartridge, truly.
Madison Avenue comes to Bend, Oregon.
What next?
A spot on Saturday Night Live?

I don't know guys ..... must be getting old or something. Looked in the safe at the hunting rifles. I've had a few over the years, some good some ...well. I've got my Remmy I re-barreled to 6.5/06. Had it for years even before 6.5 cal. became the rage. Use it for those bean field shots everyone likes. Then there's the old 06. It'll kill anything I want to shoot and oh-yea that little 223 does everything else. Yup just getting old I guess.
