257 roberts

I bought a pair of Remington 722 in 257 roberts and am looking for what best in deer loads I live in pa. I have imr 4831 and h 4350 powder to play with.

Disclaimer: These loads work in my rifle and anyone else should reduce by 10% and work up slowly.

My M77 with a 22" 1:9 Bartlein running 115gr Partitions over 48.5gr of RL23 and a 210M primer with an OAL of 3.025" is giving me 2962fps and 3/4" groups. High shoulder shot on a doe this fall broke both shoulders and exited. 20yards and down for good.

YMMV....

I have a bunch of those Speer 120gr BTSP that I was playing with using Norma MRP. I was getting sub MOA (0.70" 3 shot group) pushing them really hard....3042fps using 50.1gr. 50.6gr 3 shots were right at 1/2", but I had 0.001" head growth on all 3 of those.

My rifle really liked the Norma MRP for speed, but Norma powders have vanished, so I switched over to the RL23.

I did shoot a ladder using Hammer Hunter 103gr using RL16. My lowest fps was 2918 and the highest was 3168. I plotted all 18 shots I fired, with a 250fps velocity spread, in a 2.34" circle. The barrel was very new and my velocities kept climbing. The last 2 I fired were right at 3150fps and measured 0.18"

Hope some of this helps. Enjoy your Bob!

I got some 117 sst but have not got to play much yet . every use those ?
I generally dislike plastic tipped bullets for deer. Bad experience with Nosler BT's so I use the Speer 120 SPTB's in the 257 Roberts and 25-06. The Roberts runs these at around 2925fps but it's a Bartlein barrel that's long throated especially for this bullet. The last time I took it to 300 yds it shot 4 into 3/4" and somehow, I managed to put one 2" away from the group. Still very good as far as I am concerned so I don't think you'd be giving up any accuracy because they were Speers. Hornady may very well do great in a 257 Roberts at slower speeds?

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with the Ballistic Tips.
In general, they are my go to deer bullet for any caliber/cartridge.
But i have learned not to hit the shoulders with one.
Ditto the Berger VLD-H.

For some reason it's reported that the 117gr SST doesn't perform as other SSTs do.
They don't expand as violently & hold together much better.
There is a good deal of talk about this from our southern cousins in Australia & New Zealand.

117 hornady interlocks worked great for me. Dont use any of those powders but they should work. Have used reloder 19, 23, and H414.

my fav load now is 110 sierra gamechangers on rl23. Took a buck at 350 and seemed to perform adequately.

This is a Remington M722 Short Action, using loaded ammunition 2.775" COL. The .257 Roberts uses a 2.233" case in this Short Action giving you 0.505" of seating depth if you stick with the idea of not seating the bullet below the base of the shoulder.

Long ago I had 257's on a 722 and custom Ariska, plus a custom Mauser in 250-3000. all gave stellar performance with 100gr Partitions. I'm down to a 25-204 which will match velocities out of the old timers and the 100gr Partition is still working just fine.

In most all the 25 caliber rifles, for deer, your powders are fine, and with a load worked up in your rifle, that is accurate, with a 100 grain Nosler partition bullet, you have a combo that will kill any deer, with proper placement of the bullet, any day of the season.
