.257 ROBERTS VARMINT BULLET?

I'm looking to drag my "safe queen" .257 Roberts out and use for coyotes. I used 100 grn. Barnes for deer and pigs - but would prefer a lighter, true varmint bullet for the coyotes. What are you folks using - and with what powder? Replies are appreciated.

75/90 grain Sierra hollow points. Or a Nosler 85gr Ballistic Tip. I am working with the Sierra 90 and RL 15 at the moment but just starting out. What I like about it is if your 257 is built on a short action you can seat the bullet out farther due to the gaping HP

I'm thinking of trying the Sierra 70 Blitz king and the 75 V-Max to kick things off. I've got a supply of RL15 that works well with other bullets - might try that first.

Another vote for 87 TNTs. My 25-06 likes them @3550fps, so got a box of 500. My Roberts Ackley likes them now too @3430fps. No idea how they perform on small critters, but they sure work good on paper.

Watched my father smoke a few critters w 75gr vmax in the 25-06 a couple times. All i can say is parts were flying. Wow! What a bomb.

Little late to the party but in the 25/06, only .25 I have, the Hornady 75 vmax, and the Nosler 85 gr BT shot great. This is what I use for varmints. The 85 BT and H4831 are moving too and very flat shooting . I know you asked about a .257 R but you can get it moving also. Love to see the Red Mist.

Well, first off, if you were shooting mono bullets, your probably going to have to scrub the bejesus out of your barrel down to bare steel.
Then, being a Ruger you'll probably have to shoot upwards of 50 rounds to "season" the barrel again.
At least if it's anything like my Rugers.

As for bullet and powder choice, the 90gr Sierra BlitzKing works well in my 257 Roberts. I use either H414, or RL17.

If you want a bullet that is devastating for coyotes AND deer, hogs look at the 115gr Berger VLD over Hybrid 100V.

This is for a factory-barreled Ruger - and you are right about those barrels. I found that shooting moly or HBN coated bullets in my .243 really did away with a lot of the inconsistencies. I'm going to try that in my .257 to see what shakes.
