.257 Roberts +P

Good morning! Newbie here with first post.

I have a Winchester Mod 70 post 64, manufactured in 1983 and it is in great condition. My two part question is will it safely handle +P loads and can I use new Remington brass for that purpose? Thanks so much!

The +P loading is really the now-standard loading for the Roberts and has been for some time. The +P pressure is similar to other modern loads a la .308, 30-06, etc.. The Roberts is based on the 7x57 (and all other __x57 cartridges) which were held to lower pressures to accommodate the pre-'98 Mauser actions.

The .270 Win and .25-06 Rem are about the highest pressure non magnum round you can find. Any modern factory rifle chambered in .270 or .25-06 will take any load that does not destroy .257 Roberts brass.

Don't know about +P loads but you have one the greatest calibers ever designed in my humble opinion. My uncle had one, a Win Model 70, and when he got too old to hunt he offered to sale it to me. Money was tight, I was just out of the Army, so I passed. Big mistake.

While I love the 243 Win which supplanted the 257 Roberts, truth is the Roberts is a more flexible cartridge.

The 25-06 is SAAMI spec'd at 63K psi. 270 Win spec'd at 65K psi as is the 22-250 Rem. and that's the max for several magnum cartridges. None, including magnums, are spec'd higher than 65K psi max average.

Some are hand loaded to over typical 80K to 82K psi proof load levels; knowingly and otherwise.

SAAMI has spec'd the 257 Roberts +P cartridge at 58K psi max avg, proof loads are 71.5K psi.
