257 Roberts Brass - Win. or Rem?

Owned a great-shooting 257 Roberts for decades. Fancy gun based on a Mauser action and raised-solid rib. Always wanted a "beater". Motorcycle ride yesterday and wife wanted to stop at a pawn shop.

OK, here's the new baby Remington BDL BRAND NEW... scored for $500.

To the thousandths the chamber is identical to the old Mauser as I shot/cleaned it 6 times and measured. Neighbor has a hole in his garage floor for that.

Next step is bedding and trigger work. Scope and mounts are ordered but what about new brass?

My decades-old Remington brass is good. Heard the new stuff is not so good. Neighbor bought new Winchester 25-06 brass and it was .008 or more below specs causing him to fireform first.

What should I get for 257 Roberts brass?

I shoot 257 also . Iwould try the NOSLER BRASS other calibers that i have seen or tried were very good.

MIDSOUTH HAS A VERY GOOD PRICE ON IT 62.80 FOR 50 PIECES

Have a great day an enjoy new rifle Johnnie

The .257 has been my Coyote rifle of choice for years. Built my first one on a 1891 Argentine action....just have to keep reloads mild. I use Remington Brass mostly but have used Winchester brass to good effect. The Remington weighed and sorted was consistent, the winchester was slightly undersized..... I had a problem with one batch of Winchester brass over working the necks and lost some case life.

Ah... there's a warm place in my heart for the .257"bob".....

Yeah 260...it's arguably one of the greatest cartridges for it's size. A 6.5MM version of that case would really get that 260 shooting. Then you Ackley Improve and then ...

Always amazes me how much better than 243 the 6mm/244 Rem. is. Lots of deer and groundhogs have fallen to both my 6MM's and the 257 Roberts and they are basically obsolete.

Oh well. Been reading . Still have not decided on case brand to order. Seems like each have their issues.

Thanks for the input.

Have several 257R rifles....two rebarreled Mauser actions and a Ruger Hawkeye that I shoot occassionally at a range....haven't deer hunted in many years, but if I did, sure wouldn't hesitate to use one of them. As to using Remington or Winchester brass, personally I prefer Winchester just because I seem to get more reloading out of their brass. Necks on Remington brass seems to be thinner than Winchester, often have split necks or early signs of it with the Remington. But, I'm not enthusiastic about recommending Win brass either.

first of all, that was a heck of a find for $500. I am pretty sure that is a mountain rifle. I don't think they ever made the plain jane BDL in a .257 roberts. Just the "classic", the mountain rifle, and a few other special run guns. I have a .257 roberts and love it. I love it so much it have become a safe queen until I find a "beater" to hunt with. I have had much better luck with the winchester brass. So far mine has only killed 1 turkey, 1 deer, and 1 6x6 elk. It hasn't been hunted since. You wouldn't happen to want to sell that "beater" rifle would you? Mine seems to like the 117 grain sierra bullets the best. doesn't matter if it's the fb or the sbt, they shoot about the same with H4831sc.

how about norma 7x57 mauser. neck down with the 257 robert's full length die and fireform. a little work but the norma brass i bought 10 years ago was superior to the win/rem stuff, after all, the 7x57 mauser was the parent cartridge for ned robert's creation. [/quote] if i can see you, i can touch you. BANG!

I'm stupid. Forgot my daughter's birthday and forgot about Norma's 7mm Mauser brass. Midway and Graf have it. I had just ordered Remington after finding out Winchester is almost universally backordered.

Darn, darn and double darn.

This "beater" has already been shot 26 times. Using a slave scope and old mounts I found in the "junk", it shot ammo from the Mauser 257 into 1 1/2" groups. Now that's shoot, clean, shoot clean etc. No flyers and all I did so far is free the barrel and adjust the trigger.

Can't wait to bed the action, fit a decent scope and taylor ammo for it. Build date was April of 1998. Remember it was new/unfired from that pawn shop.

Wonder where's it's been these last 13 1/2 years?
