.250 savage variant?

I acquired what I thought to be .250 savage cartridges at a yard sale last year. I recently purchased a rifle in this caliber and was going to make same reloads for it. I started to reload them and noticed that the bullets that were in them were .243 caliber and not .257? I took some measurements on the casings and found them not to be the same dimensions as illustrated in my reloading book. The cartridges were reloads when I got them and the bullets were cast lead. I tried to resize them in my .250 dies and achieved the .257 bullet diameter but the shoulder is still considerably shorter than it should be. Does anyone out there have an idea what these casings were supposed to be? I have looked at several .243 caliber cartridges but nothing quite seems to match. I am sure it is some type of wildcat but I don't know what. I would appreciate any help. Thanks Jared

jared: Sounds like they may be 6mm250/6mm22-250, but why bother trying to use them in your rifle? I personally would not fool around with brass of unknown quality and history. Buy a bag of new Winchester, 50 for $25/ Midway) and be done with it. With all the aggravation involved, from "yard sale" ammo/brass, you are saving nothing.

I agree with you Frank. I was just curios as to what they might have been made for. I whish I had not reprimed and sized all 150 of them! Oh well it was a good learning experience!!! Thanks for your help. Jared

Sounds like an old AMU variant of the 6mm-250, they pushed back the shoulder to make a longer neck.
