25-284 barrel length question

Does anyone have experience with this caliber? Or maybe someone could give it a go in quickload for me?

I'm going with a 7 twist to shoot the blackjack 131 Ace bullet, trying to keep the build extremely light - thinking 22" or 20" barrel.

I'm concerned I won't get a full burn in that short of a barrel. Don't want to lose all my benefit over 25 Creed to a short barrel.

Any recommendations? Thanks in advance

I can't remember at this moment. I think I went with 7:5. BlackJack recommends 7: to 7:75 for the 25-284. I'm pretty sure, but, I don't think that is with that short a barrel. Maybe so. I would call them and check. My barrel is 28" finished and I get 3175 fps at about 2 grains below max in my rifle. BTW I double-triple checked twist recommendations, velocities and other info with Berger's twist rate stability table. My only problem is that I can't stretch my 25-284 out as I only have a 100 yard range.

Wow, that's some really impressive velocity. I'll be really happy to get 3100.

He's shooting a 28" and you want a 20" - 22" barrel. There is a difference. If you get 3,100 in a 20" barrel, check your pressure.

I'm shooting a 25 PRC (67 grains H2O) using the 131 Blackjack in a 22" barrel suppressed getting 3000 and a tad more with all the powder burning in the barrel. Re-26. This is my upper end accuracy node which I use in competition.

Thanks! That's exactly the info I was looking for. I was originally going to go PRC, but my smith has the reamer for x284, and I'm going with a Tikka action, so lots of room for the increased OAL.

Looks like I'll be closer to 2950 in the 22"-20" range. Maybe some magic RL26 will help.

Is there any room for weight savings besides for the barrel?

Going with as many aluminum and titanium action parts that I can source, McMillan with edge fill, and carbon fiber barrel.

The two concerns are length once the suppressor is on, and overall weight. The can adds 9.5" and 1 lb

If the 6.5x284 and 6x284 burn barrels, id hate to fund a quarter 284 barrel!!! Especially with proof barrels...

If you seat the bullet out you can switch powders to H-1000 and have a cooler burning powder helping to defeat the concept of 'barrel burner'.

Be aware that lighter is not always a great solution to all things in rifle design. Balance is a concept which comes to bear especially when you use a can on the end of a barrel.

I just ran some #'s in QL and give or take a little... this is what I got when comparing barrel lengths at 60,000 psi with 120 gr Speer BTSP and 3.000" COAL.

Started with a 20" barrel...

22" gained 80 fps +/-
24" gained another 80 fps
26" gained another 60 fps
28" gained another 60 fps
30" gained another 50 fps

This was with powders like 7828, MRP-2, RL-22, RL-25.

You're welcome.

I'd assume with the 131 gr Jack's you could subtract 5 fps from the #'s I posted to get a conservative estimate.

I just compared the 25 CM vs 25-284 with the same 120 gr bullet, at the same 60,000 psi and the same amount of bearing surface inside the case neck...

25 Creedmoor compared to 25-284 is...

20" is 90 fps slower
22" is 90 fps slower
24" is 95 fps slower
26" is 110 fps slower
28" is 115 fps slower
30" is 115 fps slower

That's kind of a general average.

The .25 CM is looking better all the time.

Yeah. I look at it this way...

the 25-284 burns about 20% more powder for a 5% increase in velocity compared to the 25 creedmoor !

25 creedmoor works on a short action while the 25-284 needs longer action.

6 & 6.5 cm brass is made by everyone and their uncle. Luckily Lapua makes 6.5-284.

Agreed. Long for caliber bullet with a low expansion ratio cartridge is a slow burn rate powder recipe. Putting that in a short barrel creates a flame thrower. That can is going to get cruddy. To each his own.

My 25-284 is on a short action. Built it 6 years ago when I set back my 25-06 to 25-284, switched it from the long action to a short action so I could build a 280AI. The long action would provide more room for the longer bullets available today. I have two 6.5x284's one 6-284 and and a 25-284. Can't see much advantage of a creed or a 284 parent case. To each their own. As long as your happy is all that matters. The cartridges today are so close to performance its a toss. Good luck.

That's really interesting. Only 90 fps slower with a Creed case vs 284? Seems like a no brainier to go Creed. I'm sure I'd get a better burn in a short barrel as well
