25-06AI anyone?

I have in the last 6 to 8 years parted with all my semi custom and custom single shot rifles as i really have not been punching paper and never did enjoy lugging them around to hunt with. The last couple years i have had stuff built geared more towards what i enjoy and that is a lot of walking and hiking while varmint hunting so all have been geared to the sendero contour and the heavier type sporters. I have a new PSS HS stock for a long action comeplete with the bottom metal that has been looking me in the eyes begging to get used. :) Never have built anything on a long action before and while talking with a good bud on the phone who is a member here he had sparked a old flame in the back of my mind on something that i had thought about many years ago. I am thinking hard on building a 25-06AI on the stock for whacking those varmints. I know their are some other cartridges to be built with a better selection of bullets but i am wanting to do something a bit different and by the little research i have done lately it seems like it would be a good performer. He did mention that i could use some 30-06 Lapua brass and neck down but i would rather go with either the Hornady or Nosler brass that is ready to roll. As far as bullet selection i am looking at the Berger 115 and Nosler 115 ballistic tip bullets and down to around the 100 gr. bullets. Is anyone here shooting 1 of these and what do you think of it? What twist barrel would i need to order for these type bullets. I would order a sendero contour barrel for the build and since i have been doing shorter barrels on builds i would not want to cut it short and would go at least 26 inches on the build. Would like to hear from anyone who has 1 or had 1 and hear the good or bad. I have done some google research on this cartridge and so far from what i have read from people who have or had them it was all very good.

I had a 25-06AI built last year. 700 Stainless LA, 27" Douglas 1-9, #5 countour with a High Tech Specialties stock. Weighs a touch over 9 pounds with a Leupold 4.5-14 MkIV.

I shot 100gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips during the summer and switched to 115VLDs for deer season. I'm very happy with the rifle, but looking back might have stuck with a straight 25-06. The Ackley sure does have a "cool factor" though.

I ended up using RE-22 with the 100s and Retumbo with the 115s. Both with Winchester brass.

I don't know if you've ran across any of my post on a search, but I've had a 25/06AI sendero for a half dozen years or more. Mine is a long range varmint build, but I've used it for deer with the 100 grainers. RL-19 and most 100 grain bullets shoots pretty well. I've had luck with most varmint bullets, TNT, Sierra, Nosler, etc. The best load is with a discontinued bullet (of course!), the 95 FB Berger.

The 1-10" twist will do everything you want, if you plan on shooting most factory bullets. I've tried Win brass and can push harder with it, but my Norma 270 groups better with milder loads. Haven't tried the two brands you've mentioned for brass.

For a hunting rifle really no downsides except higher BCs exist in other calibers, but you've got speed on your side.

Its a good cartridge....have had several over the years...1st was a rechamber on a Sendero back in 1998...shot well with reloader 22 and 100 gr sierra btsp....1st gun i took to Wy in the same year and shot a antelope about 385 with it and a big whitetal along the belle fourche river a few days later.....also a slew of whitetails and groundhogs here in PA. also shot the 115 berger a litlle and while accuracy was there i was not impressed with the bullets terminal performance.. but that was back in 2000 or so. My understanding is berger is no longer gonna make that bullet. All in all i would not do it again....have to buy dies...fireform...etc. Have gone to a .257 weatherby and never looked back.......but to each his own.

I have 25-06ackley rem action hart 10tw loves H4831SC W/85gr fowler hp I use it for long range varmit and deer I give it thumbs up.................

You will love it. Kevin Weaver is a HUGE 25-06 AI fan. I think the first rifle he ever built was one as well. Give him a call he knows lots about it.

Not that other guys don't.... But I think it's one of his personal favorites, and he hunts with it a lot.

I too have one, but I just shoot 100 grain game kings with RELOADER 19.
Mines a solid half inch gun with a #4 hart and a 3-9x40
On it.

It is looking like the 10 twist is the way to go. Are you guys using a no turn neck on your rifles? How much clearance are you running with a loaded round? Is anyone running a break on it?

I am glad you mentioned a name. I was going to ask who might be chambering this round. Does he have a web page?

Yes on the no-turn neck. It looks like the clearance is tight on mine, Dowling's reamer gave me a .001 difference between a loaded round and a fired one. Never needed a break on mine.

I have shot a 25-06 for about 35 years and with those "too light" 25 cal pills have killed numerous elk, bears, caribou (my wife and our neighbor each shot their moose with it) for the big stuff along with numerous deer and antelope. It was my "go to" rifle until....I ran across a deal on a 60s vintage custom mauser in a 6.5 gibbs. Pretty much the same dimensions as the 25-06 AI but it shoots the 6.5 cal. I think I found utopia.....high BC, quality bullets and more velocity....in a non-magnum action. It might be something for you to consider,,,,you can buy norma brass for it now.

You already mentioned the limited bullet selection in 25 but I wasn't sure you've heard about the 6.5 gibbs.

Good Luck, either caliber works great....just a better high BC bullet selection with the 6.5.

I bid on a 25-06 at a gun auction a year ago. It was a rebarrelled Mauser action. I kinda wish I would have bid more. I have been considering buying another Mauser action and building one myself. I rebarreled a Mauser 98 last winter in 35 Wheelen and was very pleased with the results! Keep us posted as to how your build turns out!
