25-06.... Why?

Clark I don't understand, how that can be. The case capacity is the same, or so close to the as not worth mentioning and the bullet dia is .007 bigger. I did the research and have read it in print several times that 25-06, 6.5-06, 6.5-284 are all within 1 grain of H20 and have so close to the same bullet dia as to make them virtually the same.

Back in the 90s I killed 117 whitetail in two years with a 25-06 and 117 gr bullets.. I believe I used Federal Premium load. The farm I hunted had agg tags at that time and we harvested a lot of deer. I went back to 25-06 last year.. dusted off my Ruger #1 and took a nice buck. Anyway 25-06 is an awesome whitetail killer. My 280 AI is awesome as well.. its just a matter of shooting well with any cartridge really.

I guided on wild pigs while in grad school and the head/chief guide used a 25-06 on everything up to elk. Good shot and premium bullets!

I had a Ruger #1 Varmint in 25-06 that I actually got a 10-shot group the size of a penny with 120 gr handloads (didn't write down the load and forgot it!!:mad::mad:)

Practice, practice, practice!!!!

I have a cousin here in Texas that wants me to build him a custom rifle. He has shoulder issues and wants a little less recoil for Elk, mule deer and hogs. His brother has a 25-06 and expounds endlessly about the virtues of the cartridge. I’ve been studying my books.
The 25-06 launches a 117 grain bullet at 3000 FPS. Woohoo! So can a .243, a 6xc, 6.5-55 ! My 6.5-47 launches a 123 at 2950.
Am I missing something? It seems to me there are some great modern cartridges that use a lot less powder in a short action, with the same performance.
Opinions wanted. I just don’t get it.
I’m thinking 243 as a suggestion. Maybe a 260 or 6.5-55.
Build him a 6.5 06imp

The practical plus for the 25-06 is that it is a cartridge which fits most actions well, and feeds and functions well. On the less practical side, it is a cartridge with a pedigree. Developed by A.O. Neidner, for cryin' out loud! It's based on what might be the finest cartridge ever developed, the 30/06. Bore diameter is a perfect 1/4 inch; none of that commie metric crap. I could go on (please don't, say the readers).
Are there better choices? Sure, there are., but the 25/06 has just enough cool factor to keep it in the running. WH

One of my hunting buddies refers to the 26-06 as God's gift to hunters. Killed a lot of 4-500 yard Floyd County VA whistle pigs with mine in the 70-80's.

25-06 WHY? Gophers to Mule Deer it just flat out works! From here to way over yonder, it works! I've had a Mod 70 25-06 for about 60 years (before Rem), never needed anything else. Same gun, same loading dies, powder etc, etc, saved a lot of money on guns, spent it on trips. The goal was to do a bunch, not just have a bunch. That gun provided a lot of wonderful memories. Gotta gopher at just over 500 yards, sent the pictures to the Varmint Hunters Assoc. The went belly up the day before, but I have the picture, memory and smiles. "If everyone had my eyes, everyone would have my rifle!"

I’m counting the days until I get mine back from Bugholes, it was my first ever rifle An A prefix 700 BDL , I’ve had since 1977 , the barrel is toast and the extractor is broken,, they are blueprinting the action and adding the m16 extractor, a #3 Bartlien 10 twist 26” stainless bbl and cerakoting the bbl action and bottom metal in midnight blue.
Should get it back after first of the year.
