25-06, what makes it so good?

The old 25-06 is just a well balanced cartridge, the 100-120 grain bullets preform very well when the animal is properly hit with a well placed shot.
Most can shoot it better, due also to the lighter recoil compared to other cartridges.
It has been taking game for a long time, with many still using it. The .257 caliber is way underrated by many.

You are correct, 25-06 is underrated by many. It's one of the most shooter friendly cartridges out there.
I use 115gr ballistic tips and generally shoot with the intent of taking out the lungs and at least part of if not the entire heart. When I open the chest of the deer it tends to look like smuckers jelly.

I’m going to be a “me too” for the 25-06. The heaviest game that I have shot with it was a feral hog. 300+ pounds, field dressed, taken at a measured 367 yards.

Why is the 25-06 so good? For the same reason the 6.5-06 and 270 Win. are so good. Deer are fragile creatures. They have thin skin (hide), their rib cage bones are really flat and easily broken. Their "boiler room" i.e. width of their chest where the vitals are contained, is narrow and "generally" their weight is under 200 pounds. All this means that a bullet that opens quickly, damaging the heart / lung and vascular system so that bleeding is "beyond profuse" will kill a Deer quickly. However, they can still run a ways whilst they bleed out! So why would they "fall right there"? This is where S-P-E-E-D, coupled with a rapidly expanding bullet comes into play. This rapid expansion not only tears tissue up, it causes an enormous amount of hydrostatic shock to be immediately transmitted into the narrow body of the deer where the vitals are, destroying all the vitals while at the same time, literally "knocking the Deer out" while he bleeds to death in seconds! Heavier bullets that don't open as quickly pass thru without the SAME amount of immediate damage / shock to the deer. Reading and seeing first hand, what Roy Weatherby tested as a very quick killer was all that speed coupled with a good bullet brings a halt to life in a hurry!

shootsdots,
That’s what I said 10 years ago when Kenny started this thread!..... I agree with your analogy.

I can't believe I've missed this thread either. I have multiple 25-06's and a 257 wby, but haven't used them for hunting yet. This will be the year they make their appearance though.

Because someone was digging deep!....my friend Kenny started it 10 years ago but it’s still a good thread.
