25-06 and R17

So in playing with loads for an upcoming antelope hunt in WY, I decided to give R17 a try in my 25.

I put it behind the 100 SMK and the results were, we'll say pretty amazing.

The load is right at what I consider max for what I like, there is probably a possibilty of a half grain more but the accuracy was impressive with the speed.

I don't have a picture of either the chorno or the target but the gun shot 4 shots into 6/10s and they were flying at a blistering average of.........3540! The high was 3560 the low was in the 3530s. SO there is some spead there but its good enough for killing.

The bullet seems to be 'outperforming' its coefficient.......anyone else ever experience this with the 100 grain 25 cal Sierra Matchking???

Anywho.....thought it'd be fun to see if others are having luck with this or I ran across something earth shattering.

Gun is a Ruger MKII Hawkeye, bought it last year and dropped it in a HS Stock and put a Timney trigger in it. Stock barrel.

Lets talk.

I have not done any work with RL17 with my 25-06s but I suggest that you confirm your velocities by shooting a few more sessions making sure that your chrono is set up correctly and is working correctly. Your velocities given are over max for 257 Weatherby with 100s. If your velocities are true then don't let that rifle get away from you because it sure is a keeper. I myself have had bad results using Match King bullets for hunting game. Sometimes they work perfectly but other times they pencil through and it makes for a loooooooooog track or lost game. The 100 Sierra Game King is another story. It is a stone killer as well as either of the 117s.

I too am working with R-17 in the 25-06. Good friend of mine is heading west for speed goat next year. He decided on the Barnes 80g TTSX so I went to work. Not sure if the bullet will be too much but I'm not buying them! ;)

Accuracy has been very good! 1/2" or less for 3 shots at 100 yards with velocity at 3,700 fps. Rifle is an old Ruger M77

Sweet spot for seating depth seems to be .030" off

I have only used RL17 with 70g bullets in my .25-06. 59g with 70g Sierra BlitzKing bullets go about 3900 fps out of my 25" PacNor barrel. 59g was the OCW load on my workup. If I got much above 59g, I got bullet blow-ups in my 3-groove barrel.

This combo is nasty on crows/coyotes.

Awesome! So there is some merit behind the madness!

Glad to see there are anew other guys getting high velocities so the non believers have a little to chew on.

My 25-06 testing hadn't begun but I use it in several calibers including the 270 with 110gr TTSX barnes buleets. I'm not pushing it hard and they hit 3550 out of a 24" shilen barrel. Very accurate. The 100 gr TTSX in 25 cal won't be much shorter than a 110gr cup & core bullet.

Decent supplies now in Michigan. Only powder that I haven't seen on shelves lately was RL-15. I should say as long as you're not at a Cabelas.
