243win in K98 Mauser - bullet suggestions

Hi All,

i have a K98 mauser in 243 win that I would like to shoot in the long range,500-600m)service sniper events we have here. The barrel is 23.6' 1:10 twist. Can anyone suggest a good bullet for this sort of application?

Something in the 85-100 grain, non-VLD match bullet by Sierra or Berger should work. One could try the 105-108 and see if they'll stabilize. You should be able to push 100's to 3000-3100 fps with the right powder. Try the .243 page on this site - very helpful.

I would suggest the 87 Hornady VMax. Have used this bullet at 500, 600 yards in F Class in a .243 Savage 12FV with good results. Was getting 3200 fps with H4831. Another good bullet is the Nosler 95 BT. Don`t think your 10 twist will stabilize 105s, 107s.

The 90gr berger hpbt is another good bullet.

If you'd like to try a custom bullet give Randy a call at Bib Bullets http://www.bibullets.com/products He makes excellent bullets,but they are flat base. He has 95 and 108 gr.

You might ask him if the 108 will work in your 1-10 twist. Hope this helps , John

Thanks for the replies guys. I had a bit of a look around and have seen the sierras. I wonder what the 70gn SMK would be like to 300m?

The 90gn Lapua scenar might also be a good option.

BigDaddie: I have used the 70 Sierra MKing in a 6mm/250 free rifle based on a 722 action for 300 metre,330 yds) ISU competition, sling, aperture sights. Got 3350 fps with Varget. The ISU 10 ring is 10 cm,3.94 in) at 300 metres so the 70 SMK has to be a very accurate bullet for shooting with iron sights and it is.
