243AI w/ 105's

Is there a particular velocity, or velocity range, that I should be looking for with the Berger 105 VLD bullets for best accuracy in the 243AI?

Can't answer per the 243AI but in all my shooting with cases that will push that class of bullets over 3000fps is a mute point as repeatable accuracy ends at 3000. My experience and what I have heard from some other good shooters.

107 gr. SMK's with lite Jam,.. "BugHole" ( 5 shots, in Low 2's to, 3's ) in my 1-7.5 TW, 6 XC at,.. 3,015 FPS
My Coyote Load with, 103 gr. ELD-X's @ 3,025 are, Sub 1/2 MOA ( same Powder chg. )

I know this is sort of a dumb question but my rifle seened to perform best when I got up in the 3150 range with 44 grs of H4350. Next time I cycled through my lot of brass I used Fed 210 primers and they seated anywhere from light to too light so I may have loosened some primer pockets . I don't particularly care what velocity I get accuracy at as long as it's reasonable so thought I would just ask to see what more experienced long range shooters were getting for their accuracy loads. I really do appreciate any input as this isn't my normal game.

IF, loosening primer Pockets in LESS THAN, 10-12 shots, your Load is too,. Hot,.. IMO
Might try "Backing off" to about, 3,050 to 3,075 FPS ( wherever, best accuracy shows with, a lite Jam on Bullet )
OR, a small amount of, "Jump"

My Remington 700 with proof 26" 7.5 twist barrel is running 43.5gr of R16 and a Berger 109 and giving me bug hole groups at 3153fps. My Ruger M77 with 26" 8 twist Shilen .243AI is running 46.0gr of R23 with a 105 VLD at just over 3100 with nice bug hole accuracy as well.

I just got some H4831SC and N165 recently. Tried 44 grs of the 4831 the other day as a starter load and got about 2950fps which I thought was kinda slow, so next will try 45 grs as I've read in the meantime that is a good range for that powder/bullet combo.

STOMP, I wish I had those Alliant powders but don't and haven't seen them available. Are they currently available. Have seen that the Alliant powders seem to give a little more velocity than most others in a given cartridge.

I haven't seem them in a long while either. Only have a little bit left of each myself.

The VV-N165 has proven to be more accurate in my 243AI with the 115 gr. DTACs. Still need to check the speed.

Your barrel length would help allot with this sort of question

John Whidden use to send those 105gr Berger's at 3275fps out of his standard 243 but you might struggle to get there with a 22" 243AI

Oh yea, John was really fast with that bullet but he also explained the barrel he was using had a lot to do with the speed he was getting. Check out the article below.

"but John’s Broughton 5C (canted land) barrels are key. These are gentler on the jackets than barrels which have very tall or sharp lands."

Barrel is 27.5" long. It's easy to get 3050fps so i had been looking more for 3150ish but then noticed some primer pockets getting loose so that prompted me to ask the original question.

With a powder like Norma MRP of VV N550 (even N165 if you can fit enough in the case) 3150fps in that length barrel isnt to much of a ask.
I had a LR hunting load in a 28" 6SLR sending 105 VLDs at 3350fps with N550 but obviously that's not a load thats going to be gentle on brass or a barrel for that matter.

On the other side of the coin the difference between 3050fps and 3150fps isn't going to be major, if it shoots at 3050fps and the brass lasts shoot it there, when you start pushing the speed in that 243AI case your going to notice donut problems at one point as well

After reading Whidden's article last night I found and ordered a 5R barrel to try. Never had a 5R before so thought it would be interesting to try. I'm mostly shooting VLDH bullets looking toward long range PD shooting so if the 5R is easier on those thinner jacketed varmint bullets that is probably good.

Sounds like a winner Joe. Please keep us posted as to how it performs.
