I am retooling to 243AI. I shot the 284Imp and 6dasher for a couple years. I like them, just trying something else. Been looking at some #s and the 243AI is the one I chose for 600 and 1000yd BR.
I ordered a min. spec reamer from Kiff. I have a throater. My question is, what twist barrel will I need to shoot the 115Dtac? I plan to shoot the 105-115 bullets on a low node.

I don't know if it will be feesable to try to shoot both 105 and 115 bullets if they will require diff. length throats. My throat reamer is 1.30deg. lead. My thinking is I might be able to shoot the 105/108bt's jumped and the 115's jammed. I don't have to shoot the different weight pills, just have a few laying around.

Any 243AI shooters out there?

lemme here your thoughts, Jim

.135 is a good FB. "TWEENER" for the 105/115`s.

7.83 is the twist i went with after many recommendations.....

This is in my 6 Dasher.....YMMV.

Good luck,

Phil.

Why not just shoot the 105g berger hybrid. Has about the same bc as the dtac and youll be able to push them a hair faster.

Hi
I run a .243AI with 105's but prefer the 115g VLD's @3200 fps out of a 1:8 Broughton 5C 32", I jump them both around 15th, I personally don't see a problem using both pill's in the same chamber, but when you get the 115's working you won't go back to the 105's.
Again personal choice, but I prefer the VLD's over DTAC's ::)
I have not tryed the 105 Hybrid's yet, they may change my mind, and I will come back to 105's, I have given the 180g Hybrids a go in my 7mm Rsaum and they are Awesome!!!
You will go through the barrel at this speed, :-[ re chamber at 1K and get another 500 perhaps.
My load is Hot so be warned 48.9g VV165, BR2, 15th off, F/L re size every time.

I agree, set it up in an 8 twist barrel and run the Hybrids. But as mentioned you will shoot that barrel out quickly especially with extended strings of shooting. But that extra 2-300 fps will help greatly in windy conditions.

Yeah, I'll probably shoot the 105 hyb if they shoot well. My dasher didn't like them, it shot the 95vlds and the 108bts pretty good. For the 243AI, I was thinking a heavier bullet with slower powder= longer barrel life? I plan to get it nitride treated if it shoots really well.

I am trying to go at this like a big dasher with mild loads with the option to heat it up. What powder to best move a 105hyb at 3100 and reasonably fill the case?

I'm actually shooting the Berger Hunting VLD's. It's a hammer with this combo. I'm using these bullets because I intend to give a few stubborn coyotes a big surprise this winter. The person I bought this rifle from was shooting the identical load except with the 107 grn Sierras. I really have to question his sanity for selling it to me. ;)

Just a thought to consider. if you are going to order a barrel anyway. Maybe just go for the 1:7.8 or even a 1:7.9 so that you can try all the bullets mentioned so far in this thread. Either will work with the 115gr on down and all that capacity of the 243 AI and it wont limit it you in either class of bullets you decide on ( 105 or 115)
I shot alot of 115gr class bullets ( JLK and Berger VLD's) out of a straight 1:8 cut rifled Satern barrel 30" in the 6mm Super X or what is now called the 6mm SLR. Both 115's shot best for me in my barrel at around 3000fps and the 105gr went from low 3100 to high 3200fps including the very cost effective AMAX. Could have pushed them faster but the accuarcy for me was right in that zone.

Very best of luck in your endevor.
