243 with a 75 grn Sierra HP.

I have some 75 grain Sierra hollow point bullets and was wondering if anyone has tried these out in a 243 with any success? I will be attempting to use them in a standard weight barrel hunting rifle. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience?

Bigame1: Just bought a Savage M11 combo in .243 for varmint/deer. Got a real good deal on it. Seems nobody wants a Savage without the AccuTrigger but it adjusted to a nice crisp 3 lb letoff with no creep. Came with a Simmons scope which will go on a .22 rimfire. Never owned a Simmons that held its zero on a centerfire. Replaced with a 3-9 Bushnell. Bought the rifle to take the pressure off my F Class rigs such as a Savage 12FV in .243. Don`t want to shorten its barrel life with light bullets using faster burning powders.

Worked up loads in the M11 with a bunch of bullets and powders. Was surprised by the shortish throat of the M11 as shown by my Sinclair OAL gauge. Any other Savage or Stevens that I own have longish thoats.

One combo is the subject of your initial inquiry. Loaded Sierra 75 hps over 40.0 gr Varget which chronod at 3293 fps average for 3 shots. OAL is 2.575 which puts the 75 hp 20 thou off the lands. This compares to Sierra`s spec of 2.625. But this pretty well hits the Sierra Manual velocity with this load. Finally got a day with light wind, what`s with this Spring?) and punched 3 shot groups at 100 and 200 metres,110 and 220 yds). Average group size for the Sierra 75 hp was 3/4 inch at 100 and 1 inch at 200. Was really impressed with the 200 average. And this with a supposedly cheap discount rifle but it is the same action as on the 12FV. Hope this helps you in your quest.

Bigame1: The Sierra 75 gr. #1510 has been one of my most consistantly accurate bullets over the years: a game bullet with match accuracy. Worked great in several 243 barrels,,Douglas & Shilen), a 6mm22-250 Shilen, and is my 'go-to' lighter weight bullet choice for my 6mmBRs. Their slightly heavier 85 gr. HPBT #1530 is also a long time favorite.:)

The Sierra and hornady 75gr's give me great results through my Rem. 700 VLS and 7400, with the VLS it holds .5 moa out to 300 with no problem. I've used H4350 and R-15, with the best results being the R-15 for the 75gr heads, I also use 85gr Sierra's and 87gr V-Max Hornady with the same results but out to 600yds. with H4350.

Bigame1: Had a good session at the 300 metre bench rest range today with the Savage M11 .243 and the 75 Sierra hp, 3-9 Bushnell. Thought of your thread so decided to add some info. A load of 41.0 RX15 which chronod at 3335 gave me the following three shot groups:

100 metres 5/16
200 metres 1 1/4
300 metres 1 1/16

The 300 metre group was smaller than the 200. I quietly took down my targets and went home feeling pretty good.
