243 Winchester 10 twist

Planning on purchasing a Thompson Center Venture Compaq 243 Winchester. This particular rifle has a 20 inch barrel with 1-10 twist. What type of accuracy can I expect with a 90 to 100 grain bullet?
Thanks
JDY

With 90-100 grain bullets you would be better served with an 1:8 twist.

My model 7 Remington had a 1:10 and it would not shoot bullets over 85 grains very well. It loved 70-85 grain bullets.

My 18" barrel does not like the longer 100 gr bullet in 243win., Rem 600. The 85gr Sierra is about the longest bullet for top accuracy, IMO. http://www.bergerbullets.com/twist-rate-calculator/

depends on the bullet. VLDs will need to be lighter, round nose, spire points, soft points should be fine as they were the standard for 10 twist. Plastic tipped bullets should be shorter and lighter to shoot well. The 95 gr ballistic tip seems to work ok so similar length bullets should also. 105 AMAX shouldn't work very well and neither should the copper alloy solid bullets as they tend to be long for weight.

I shoot 95gr Balistic Tips and 87gr Bergers in my 1/10 twist .243 Sako with fantastic results. Have shot them out to 1000y but playing with longer bullets now to see how they do in the twist. 87gr Vmax and 88gr Berger FB was also very good

Do NOT get 1 in 10 twist. I have one and it sucks. It won't even group an 85 gr good at all. All my rifles with factory 1 in 9.125 (Rem) have no issues with pills up to 100 gr.

When I had one years ago, the 10 twist would shoot the flat based 100 gr bullets fairly good. About 3/4 inch in a hunting rifle. The 100 gr boat tail on the other hand, not so good.

Has anyone used Barns Triple Shock 80 gr with the plastic tip?

The Barnes 80 grain TTSX is a match made in heaven in my sons Model 7 .243 with custom Rock Creek 10 twist barrel. I have some of the mentioned 85 grain Sierras but never tried them as the Barnes do the job well. I personally would not shoot over 85 grain weight bullets in a 10 twist.

I have a 1:10 Krieger on a 243AI. I think its one of my poorest choices in twist rates yet. Even if I had gone to the 1:9 it would have been better. With that being said I am able to stabilize the 95gr VLD Berger. Only because I am stomping on it with a lot of speed. My plan was to shoot light bullets during the build...then I found that the heavy's work a little better at extended ranges. Cant wait till this barrel goes Teet's up. Going to load up some of the new 87gr VLD's this summer and see how it works.

Shot a 3/4 moa with 80gr. Barnes TTS bullets. Tried the Hornady 100gr. interlock and this is the group the rifle shot. Could no be happier with this rifle.

In my 1/10' twisted 6x45 & 6x6.8 I run the 55g nbt, 65g vmax, 80g speer, 80g tsx/ttsx & 85 tsx, 85 SGKHP, 87g vmax & 95g nhbt with ZERO issues to 700 yards. They all stabilize perfectly and are very accurate...at least in my rigs.

I've had a 10 twist 243 since I bought it off the shelf back in 1974. It is on its second barrel which is a 10 twist also. I've shot 95 and 100gr bullets through it and always migrated back to the 70-85gr bullets. Out of both the original barrel, and the current barrel, the bullet that has given me the best accuracy and reliable performance on anything from groundhogs, foxes, coyotes, wild hogs, and deer has been the Sierra 85gr HPBT bullet. I've found the 75gr Vmax to also give very good accuracy and devastating terminal results to chucks and Pdogs too.

So since you didn't specify what exactly you were going to use this rifle for, I just guessed that it would be a hunting rifle. If you are buying it to target shoot with, a 24" or longer would be a better choice IMHO. I'll always have 2 rifles in my safe.... a 220 Swift, and a 243. JME. ;) WD

Thanks for your reply.

I've harvested deer with a fair number of different rifles and bullet combinations. If I had to take my pick of all of them I've used, it would be my 243 with the 85gr Sierra HPBT bullet.

But if for some reason it doesn't shoot in your rifle, there are many others in the 6mm family of bullets that will work given due diligence in reloading and proper shot placement. :) WD

Hi
I fully concur with WyleWD. 75gr VMAX are devastatingly accurate in my 1/10 two. The barrel is 22 inches. I use 40gr Varget to push the bullet which gives 3350 fps. I get more accuracy (sub half moa) using 42gr Varget which gives 3500 fps but this is a hot load in my rifle and bolt lift is a bit stiff. The deer don't know the difference between 40gr not 42gr so I use the lower charge.
Happy hunting.
