I have been shooting the 243 SLR in competition since Whitley came out with it many years ago. It is the answer to pushing heavy 115 gr bullets at competitive speeds. Historically, Whitley designed three reamers for the cartridge, one for light bullets (short throat), one for heavier bullets with a no-turn neck, and one strictly for 115 gr. bullets. The no-turn neck reamer was designed for Winchester or Remington brass due to the neck thickness. He stated that if you use Lapua brass, you must neck turn as the Lapua brass has thicker neck brass. It was not because the Lapua brass was not consistent enough. You don't have to turn the necks? I've read a lot about the SLR and it seemed the general consensus was that Win brass was the only brass that had consistnet thickness throughout. Lapua and the like had to be neck turned. If that isn't the case I would def take some interest in an SLR.
With heavy 115 gr bullets, slow powder like VV 165 or H1000 works well and can extend your bbl life. If you have a stock of 105 B Hybreds, H4831sc will surprise you all the way out to 1000 yds.
I have a BRX and a Dasher, they will not push the heavy 115 gr bullets to equivalent velocities as the SLR. Wind drift and drop with the SLR is equal to a 6.5x284 with the 142s and bbl life will be much better while recoil is also less.
