243 Win at 1,000 yards

over at the farm I have 3 gongs at 1,025 yards,,30 inches,15 inches and 10 inches,,shooting my 243 bbl today with the 105 VLD orange box and 41.5 H4350 and the first time I shot at 1,000 with the 35X Leupold I got from Sam Hall,,got a solid zero on the 15 inch plate and conditions were really good,,only needed 3 clix right for wind,,,first 12 were good hits,,shot 13 was just off edge right,,by then mirage off bbl was pretty bad but I managed to hit the next 6 but shot 20,I cant say where it hit as it was all I could do to see,,,,

I know to most yall comp shooters that may not sound all that impressive but to me 18 of 20 on a 10 inch gong at a grand aint to shabby,,

shooting the 105 VLDH and 41.5 H4350 with really good ES and SD numbers at 3200 fps,,

in F Class is the 10 ring MOA or what,,are there different targets for ever distance ?? I have never shot any comp but would like to start trying my luck at something with one of these bbls instead of just burning them up off by myself,,LOL

most of the 105s are the grey dust a little high and right of center,,the big dings are from a 338 and 300 WSM,,

Nice shooting. I think the 243 has more long range potential than it gets credit for and sure there are lots of good other rounds also but the 243 will shoot. I sure hope it will because I'm in my 11th week of waiting for my new 243 barrel. One of the main reasons I went with the 243 is if you shoot 500 to 1K rounds on a trip away from home suddenly brass and bullet cost become a big concern fast.

Good shooting.

I believe Mr. Whidden gives it plenty of credit (he won the Wimbledon Cup with one this yr) , as do a number sling shooters who shoot the 6SLR which is just a 243 with the shoulder pushed back to 30*

I just noticed the carbon ring on the concrete under the Vias brake,,that is a pretty warm load but counting the sighters I shot 25 rounds pretty quick and didnt get any ejector swipe or heavy bolt lift even with the rifle pretty dang warm,,

Nice shooting mr.big.
There is nothing wrong with the 243. it's was developed as a varmint round and I have witnessed many one hole groups shot with them out of heavy barreled varmint rigs. I believe it was Warren Page it who did most of the development with the 243 before it was a factory round. I have also witnessed it shoot 1 1/2" 5 shot groups in a 500 meter ground hog match shooting Nosler custom 105's.
There is no doubt they shoot. I think someone said number one in reloading die sales also.
Very nice shooting , Nice rifle..

With your stated load I'd bet your accurate barrel life is around 1200 rds. That might be one of the reasons you don't see it on the line as much as other 6mms shooting between 2900-3050 fps.

Good Shooting

Rich

Big fan of 243 Win here too. Probably one of the most underrated cartridges. Factory Rem 1 in 9.125 twist barrel with 95 gr SMK, H4350 or IMR4350, Win brass and primers, no neck turning, etc. What's not to like!

Love my .243 Ruger VT it shoots awesome, always wished it had a 30 degree shoulder.
It has a very fast barrel. If I remember correctly 80 Bergers were right at 3600 fps 55 Noslers easily hit 4000fps

the VLDH is the orange box Berger VLD bullet that is near to my heart,,

this bbl was really just an excuse to reuse a BRDX bbl that the throat was worn,,after seeing what I have seen I may give it another shot with a new bbl,,after I melt this one down of course,,

Glad to see folks using 95 SMK,s and Imr 4350. I thought I was the only one. I also have a great load using 105 AMAX and RL 19.

Im a huge fan of the 243. You can hit any velocity node you want without too much brass trouble. Barrel life is of no concern to me

I used to be a .243 Win fan until I had my first 6BR built back in 2004. I don't believe the .243 Win is even in the same league as a 6BR in terms of accuracy.

Just sayin'.

I was in the french national hunter team and I do found there is not much accuracy difference between the 243 and the 6BR with high quality rifles and
bullets . For 1000 yds ,the 243 is stronger just look at John whidden results!

Just my 2 cents,

Michel

THERES A LOT OF RIFLES I DON'T HAVE BUT LORD WILLING I'LL NEVER BE WITH OUT A 243 GREAT LITTLE CARTRIDGE KILLED A LOT OF GAME WITH A 243
