243 using a long action

I posted the thread "First Coyote build,6mm-06)" and was leaning toward doing a 6x284 or something else with a bigger case but I guess now I have decided to be more budget minded and stick with the simplier stuff.

Will a 243 feed reliably on a 25-06 long action savage? I plan to shoot 105-107 grain bullets and 87 grain vmaxs. I need a repeater to be able to hunt coyotes and from time to time shoot targets with buddies for fun. No competition.

Or should I go with a 6mm?

Woody, sorry I can't answer your question but I'm interested in the same sort of thing. I've got a factory model 700 ADL LA in 7mm mag. I also have a custom 30-06 barrel. Thinking of swapping barrels and making the 7mm into an -06. The -06 bullets seem to pick up well out of the magizine on the long action but I don't want something that may jam on occasion either. I'd have a gunsmith switch the barrels and then I'd have to switch bolts and fill in the stock to fit the smaller contour. So maybe someone can help us out with some pointers.

The US Army uses a 308 in a long action. I did hear that they had some feeding issues but really how many could that be in their main sniper rifle M-24? I would guess it is probably very low and shooter caused.

greenheadwoody,

It should work fine, Savage did it for years as they only made a Long Action the 110, just get the .243, .308 mag. box, follower and spring you shold be good to go.

Akbushape,

The .30-06 is a Long Action caliber, it will work fine also after you change your bolt & follower. You'll have to have it head spaced with the .30-06 bolt when you have the barrel installed.

i have converted a savage 110 form 308 to 3006 ackly here what i found the cut in the under side of the action required milling out as the 3006 mag well is langer than the cut out, or more simply the 308 mag well well not fit a long action,as there would be on rear well suport) but there would be no problem in making a reducing bock should on be need,,simlar to the one for using 6br in short action rem repeter)

when you have the 243 barrel on the action try with the standerd mag it should work fine, if it dose not its only a small job it fit the block and 243 follower and spring

hope this as been of help f you need more detail mp me

I've magazine fed 243s' over the past 10 years thru an 03-A3 receiver: enough to burn-out 2 barrels. Never had a problem.
