243 - IMR 4350/H1000 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

Any suggestions with this combination?

I'm really hoping to find some loading info on this combo with moly bullets. Anyone have experience shooting the same combo?

its been a while since i loaded for 243win i originally i thought that H4350 but the ES and SD where thru the roof with BR2 primers but i ended up with H4831SC/IMR4831 but i have heard some good results with H1000/ Retumbo

hope this helps but just try out H4350 and see where you end up.

Re: 243 - IMR 4350 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

I load RL22 with the heavies in two of my 243 Win's and it does very well for me. I dont see a lot of guys using it but like they say do what works for u. Both guns like almost the same powder charge within .1 and of course different seating depths.

Re: 243 - IMR 4350 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

My 100 yard 5 shot group results using 39.6 gr of IMR 4350 today. It was windy and I was shooting off of my home made wooden bench rest. I need to get a chrono soon to see what the actual FPS is.

Re: 243 - IMR 4350 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

I tried 47g of H1000 with 107 SMK and got 2960 fps...Gun shot .378 five shot group first time out with it! I just got some Nosler custom competitions from Midway in the mail and thinking about trying some Hybrid 100:) looks promising.

Re: 243 - IMR 4350 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

I also worked my way up to 40.8g of Imr 4350 with 107 SMK...Note worked up to high node!!! H1000 worked better then the 4350's for me..

Re: 243 - IMR 4350 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

I'm going to work up in .4 increments with the IMR 4350 and see how it goes. Here's the next jump up to 40.0 gr, and I knew the 5th shot was my fault and was a little off, the first 4 were really tight. I think if I had done my part the group would have been well under 1/2".

From what I have been reading in here the H1000 will be on my "to get" list to try out. Thanks.

I'm now off to the reloading bench to load some 40.4 gr test loads. Maybe I'll get them tested tomorrow. ;)

Re: 243 - IMR 4350 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

I like Imr 4350 for a lot of my loads but I found H1000 and Retumbo to be less temp sensitive.

Re: 243 - IMR 4350 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

I'll be out shooting 50 rounds of test loads today using a chronograph for the first time (a buddy's who's coming down to shoot w/me). I've got 25 each of 40.4 gr and 40.8 gr IMR 4350 loaded and these are loaded even closer to the lands, only about 0.10 off the lands. We'll see how these shoot and group for me. I want to get 5 shot groups less than 1/2" @100 yards, 1/4" is my goal but I'd settle for 1/3" groups. We'll see how it goes today. It will be nice to have a chronograph to see what the actual FPS is on these loads. I might try some 200 and 300 yard groups as well today.

On a side note:

Here's my loading procedure so far.......

Of course I start by cleaning all my pre-fired brass in the tumbler with walnut media to get'em nice and shiny. I trim the meplat of all my bullets and separate them by weight for loading. Then I FL size my cases and prep them by using a primer pocket uniformer hand tool and clean the primer pocket, then I deburr the flash hole, then I trim the cases with a RCBS 3-way trimmer. I then clean all the cases in my tumbler again using corncob media and a touch of polish. After that I get all the cases primed. Then I load the powder (using the RCBS 5-0-5 scale) and then seat the bullet. Some say some of these steps are tedious but I find myself enjoying the tedious stuff like meplat trimming the bullets and separating them by weight. My wife has always said I have a little bit of an OCD side to me so the tedious details are enjoyable for me, maybe I'm just nuts. :o

Re: 243 - IMR 4350 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

I agree with RaythemanRoe 100%. My first long range BR barrel was a 243 prefit and I went to H1000 as it was touted as a powder easy on 243 barrels. I used 46 gr of H1000 behind 107 SMKs and had excellent luck in my 28" 1-8 barrel. My barrel outlasted all the nay sayers predictions!

Todays results using 40.8 gr. in windy/gusty conditions.

5 shot 100 yard group well under 1/2"

My 200 yard 5 shot groups were under 1" wide and about 3/4" tall

And my 300 yard 10 shot group was about 2 1/2" wide but only 1 1/2" tall

Am I right in interpreting the results as being about 1/2 MOA overall?

Re: 243 - IMR 4350 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

Just wanted to add that I'm not seeing any signs of pressure issues yet and I'm wondering about jumping up to 41.2 gr next?

I didn't get to chronograph these loads today as my buddy didn't make it down but I ordered a chronograph from Midway today so I should have it for next weekend's test shooting.

I think I'll see about getting some H100 this week as well, if anyone has some on their shelves anyway.

Re: 243 - IMR 4350 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

IA./ Trevor,,.you can go one higher yet!!...with 4350,,,,with a long bbl like yours I would also try 4831 and Rx/22,,,Roger

Re: 243 - IMR 4350 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

My plan for this week is to load up test rounds using 41.2 gr of IMR 4350 and to get some H1000 and try 46 gr of that as well. My tightest group so far was with the 40.8 gr of IMR 4350 (about .4") so maybe one more step up will get me to the .25"-.3" range I'm looking for. I should get my chronograph this week as well so it will be nice to finally know what the actual FPS is that I'm achieving with these loads. From what I've gathered in here and from other information I want to be in the 2900-3000 FPS range using the 107 gr moly MK's to be able to see the most effective accuracy, right?

The rifle has not been bedded yet as I was waiting to see how it shot w/o bedding it. The Choate stock I have has the aluminum bedding block in it and I wasn't sure if I would even need to bed it. What's your thoughts on that?

I should have my new Rifle Basix Sav-2 trigger installed later this week as well and getting down to a 5-6 oz trigger should help as well I'd think.

My overall goal is to be able to get .25"-.3" 100 yard groups with this gun on a consistent basis, is that an unreasonable expectation? I'd like to see my 300 yard groups around 2" (or less). If I can get to those group sizes I think I should be able to be competitive with this rifle @ 600 yards if I do my part as my whole plan with this rifle was to be able to shoot in some 600 yd F-Open competitions and at least be competitive.

Re: 243 - IMR 4350 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

My barrel is 1-8 27" and Imr 4350 is a great 95g bullet pusher but once you get your crono you'll see the magnum powders are king!

Re: 243 - IMR 4350 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

Magnum powders push the heavy's faster there for easier to stabilize! I would bed your action ( time consuming)...Also to speed up your load development try 300y ladder testing, from your post I would assume your looking for the a high node....

Re: 243 - IMR 4350 - 107 gr moly MK's - 28“ bbl

My results tonight using 41.2 gr of IMR 4350 resulted in a 5 shot 1/3" group @ 100 yards.

Chronograph results averaged 2967 FPS with a 15 FPS spread.
