243 w/Heavy Bullets and H1000

I have noticed that there have been some posters who advocate the use of H1000 in the 243 W with 115 gr bullets to get exceptional velocity and better bbl life.

Running various charges of H1000 thru Quickload in a what if scenario don't indicated the velocity levels that the posters have cited.

Quickload shows 46 gr as a compressed load and just barely hitting 3000 fps with a 107 SMK.

My 243 SLR is used strictly for shooting 115 gr bullets and I was interested in the slower burning powders to try and perserve the throat of the bbl. H1000 (as far as Quickload is concerned) seems too slow and doesn't develop enough velocity.

You experience has been?

I only chronoed a few loads with 105's in my 243, but i never reached the velocity or accuracy I could with H4350. The 115's may be different but i think in my experience that H 1000 is too slow. Even in my 264 or 300 WM with 180's I use a faster powder such as IMR or H 4831. It seemed like with H 1000 in a 26 in. 243 I had some unburnt powder and residue left.

I've never tried H1000 but I tried Retumbo which is a tad slower than H1000, 49.2 grains gave me 3070 FPS with a 105 VLD. It's very compressed. I ended up switching to Reloder 17, 43.2 grains gave me 3175 FPS with a 105 VLD.

Wayne,

Thanks for the reply. Some have claimed 3100+ fps for loads with H1000 and I just don't see how that is possible.

H1000 may be just too slow for the limited case capacity of a 243.

I, too, read the info on using H1000 to increase life of my 243 WIN barrel.

I have been using 46gr of H1000 in Lapua cases with 105 A-MAX MOLY set back 0.080. I get 2970 fps with single digit SD. This load/case is just on the verge of a compressed load.

I am very pleased with my groups, from a 28" Shilen barrel, at both 600yd and 1000 yd. Although, I still can't shoot as good as the gun is capable of!

I've seen 3000+ out of a .243 with naked 115 Dtac's using H1000. Getting 3150 fps will more then likely be tuff. I just borescoped my 6CM after 1900+ rounds with H1000 and 115 Dtac's being used, I am happy to say it is in great shape. I've seen more wear in 300 shot's in a .243 using Reloader 25. I plan on measuring the throat soon, but just by what I see and have seen in earlier round counts this thing has plenty of accurate barrel life for 2500 rounds more.
