243 AI, H1000 or R25?

Hello guys,

I am going to start developing a load for my 243 AI. I will be shooting some hornady 105 bthp or some berger 105 hybrids. This is a strictly f class rig that will be shot at 600 yards only. What powder do you guys think will work best and what would be the recommended loads?

I shot RL 22 and 25 in my first 243 AI barrel over 105 bergers. Toasted the barrel in 1200 rounds. It gives you velocities in 3100 - 3200 fps in a 28 inch tube. I replaced the barrel with a 1 x 7.5 and moved up to 115 dtacs still using RL 25 at 1.5 grains less than the 105's. Velocity is down 300 fps and my mil elevation changed by almost 2 additional mil at 1100 yards. Still shoots exceptional. Barrels are easy to replace. Have fun. Scott.

H-1000 will be easier on the barrel....Work up to about 49g for the 105's and that will be around 3150ish and should make the barrel last a bit longer. The double base powders are a bit tougher on barrels....

I don't see a need to push velocity hard at 600 yards. I prefer to find the accuracy node a few grains before the hottest one. It is easier on brass and barrel life. I saw a pierced primer from a hot load vent gas back into someone's face last weekend. A more moderate load reduces the risk of that also.

Temperature stability is also more important to me than peak velocity. I like H1000 for this and similar applications.

I have shot H1000 exclusively in my 6CM's (Competition Match) barrels. Barrel life and accuracy are both outstanding.

My first bench rest gun was a 28" 243 WIN. I shot 105 SMK, A-MAX and Hybrids.
46gr of H1000 gave me about 2900fps, a node with the 1 in 8, 28" barrel.
And, the barrel life was way better than the nay sayers claimed!
