.243 Advice

Hey Joe! That was actually measured by a gunsmith with a headspace gauge! He slid in the gauge and was able to fit 2 pcs. of paper between the bolt face and the head space gauge! He said a pc. of paper is .003" thick! Just going by what the smith told me! He basically told me what you told me, not optimum but, alright to shoot! Didn't realize there was such a difference tween manufacturers on headspace of brass! Interesting.

i have the lh sps varmint 243..breakin..get a bore guide & a good cleaning rod ..20 shots cleaning between each shots then 3 shot groups cleaning after each group..look at the patches..any blue/green..use a good copper cleaner..lub the lugs & bolt raceway..dodn't overheat.i replaced the stock w/ an h-s & the trigger w/ a lh jewell w/ bolt release.sold the x-pro trigger.nobody seems to want the stock..even for cheap.the rifle w/ some load work, shoots 5 shot 100m groups .5" or less

Hello,

I also have a remington chambered in 243. I have burned quite a bit of powder through it, the best results that I have come across are 105 A-Max with H4350 and the 87 V-Max with H4831SC. I haven't tried any Sierra or Berger bullets really. I picked the A-Max load because of their wind bucking powers, they shoot in the 1/2 MOA range at 600 yards. I am hoping for a small bit of improvement with the new Jewel trigger that is coming in the mail ;D

hey ben, i asked the guys at sinclair about barrel break in also. they told me the same thing as tome is saying for the most part. shoot 5 rounds, clean like you have never cleaned befor in between each round. then 5, 3round groups again cleaning in between. then 5, 5round groups, and u guessed it, clean like hell in between each group. i just did this with a sps in .223. i used and liked very very much montana extreme copper cream. one of the best cleaners i have used todate. it striped everything out rather quickly.

re: the jewel trigger..i ordered the trigger w/ bottom bolt release & lh saftey..ordered directly from jewel set @ 4oz.i expected the trigger to be a direct replacement to the rem 700 x-pro..it was as far as fitting..but i could not get the bolt release to work..i ended up taking it to a gunsmith..he had to use a grinder to make the br work...when rem changed the trigger..they also changed the sear..works fine now that it's been fitted..problem w/ the jewel..after you use it..everything else feels like junk

600 yards? Forget the A-Max.....good bullet but I would rec a berger bullet. They stabilize after 300 yards and you can stack'em down range. Contact berger directly by email and you can have shooting tables that are very accurate to which type of load you chose. Helps to have something in black and white when you start. Everyone else who has posted has some really good ideas and all worthy of consideration. Best thing to do is always find out what shoots best for you. Gotta punch the paper first and figure it out. Its not like playing sega, gotta go and do the work. Make sure to reload and take your time.

Just figured I'd give everyone who gave me advice a report from the field. Having never broke in a barrell before I was surprised to find out what a pain in the ass it was hahahaha. Anyways bought some factory ammo (federal 70gr nosler ballistic tip) to break it in while I'm waiting for my dies to come in. After a good day of shooting and trying to apply as much of you guyses advice as possible I've got it shooting 1/2" groups @ 100yrds (so long as I do my part). Thank you for all of the advice. Ben

My Remmy 1 in 9.125" barrel likes 85 grain Sierra HPBT Game Kings with H4831sc. My rifle is a .243 AI. .25" groups at 100 and bangs the hell out of steel at 500 meters. Knocks over bowling pins with ease at 400 even with the G/F on the trigger ;)

A friend of mine has a factory Rem. Model 700 VS with the same twist and he is shooting Hornady 105 A-Max's with H100V. He is getting sub .25 MOA with those 105's. I need to get his load info from him and apply it to my Ackley.

Its never bad to keep the barrel clean while your breaking in the throat. If its a custom tube then it really doesnt break in, it starts their.

This is not a bad place to start but in the first five shots if you see very little coppering cleaning every one then you should not waste your time and just shoot it. I start by cleaning every few and if its coppering up then sure keep it clean until its not. But if its coming out fairly clean just shoot it...
