243 ackley powder help

Dusty Have you ever tried Ramshot Hunter? The reason I ask is that I have a 6SLR Match Rifle that I tried it in with 95gr Match kings and it hammers with that load. I see it is at the top of the speed list again for the 70's in the AI as well. Might be worth a look see?

It's (Hunter powder) at the top of the speed list over a lot of powders and cartridge/bullet combos... Check out Modern Reloading "Second Edition" by Richard Lee for some great numbers using it. I would be interested in knowing how temp stable it is shooting in 100 degree to 32 degree days???

This has gotten a bit off track for me. My original question was powders for 70 grain bullets. Not 105's or anything of the sort. H1000 and rl250000 is way too slow of a powder for the lighter 6mm. Not trying to be difficult but if you guys would like to discuss ramshot powder and your favorite heavier bullet combination, could you please just start your own thread? I've got lots of pm's from folks from this thread that have helped tremendously. But being the op I have no interest in discussing heavier projectiles and powders associated with such. I don't hijack other folks threads and would appreciate the same in return. Thanks guys and happy shooting!

Not sure if that was directed at me, but I am here to tell you Ramshot Hunter might be a darn good place to look at your 70 grain load. Plus those I listed.. Even though they look a little slow to you compaired to Varget, H4895 ect ect I can assure you that they are all viable powders.

I guess If I Had to pick a middle ground powder, I would look at the H4350 burn rate area.

Dusy Gave some good advice as he normally does. Go with that.

Russel, it wasn't directed at you. You pointed out some pretty good powders to look at in your previous post. My apologies if it came across that way. I've had someone look at others in quickload and the h-1000, rl25 and such are just much too slow for my specific set up. I know quickload is not the oracle but... I doubt I could even fit enough of it in the case. There are just better choices out there. I'm sure Dusty gives pretty good advice. Not sure if I should laugh about his train derailment pic or be offended myself. Don't know the guy but I'll give it the benifit of the doubt. I mean, this IS an online forum... It's tough when someone recommends 4064 thru h1000. Might as well say, all of em! Ackleyman has been very helpful with helping me through pm. With actual first hand experience with these particular components. I'm really not a jerk! I'm just trying to keep it to 70 gr projectiles and powders. Not 105's and powders that are way too slow for the 70s. To put it in perspective- I am no longer looking at the Varget, 4064, 4895 and going with something in the 4350 speed category to start. This is my first ackley and I'm man enough to admit that I am not experienced enough to pick a starting point for such a cartridge. There are way more experienced folks, perhaps like yourself, that can help give specifics and to -help educate- as to why you recommend such instead of just spouting off powders. I REALLY do appreciate folks who are sincere in helping!

I was being funny. I never try to offend. If i ever do ever in the future take it as a joke because im really a funny guy and get along with everyone i assure you!!

Hey man, your fine. It's all good. No worries. Wish I new a little more about these newer Imr powders though.... I've been bowhunting all week. Muzzleloader hunting all next week. Want to start working up something for coyote in Jan. For after the whitetail season. I feel a bit overwhelmed sometimes with all the choices in powders. You hate to burn 1/2 way through your barrel looking. I feel like I could use w760/h414 in a ball powder. I have a ton of Imr 4350. I bet that would be a good choice. Kinda curious about the 4451. Guess I will never know unless I'm willing to give it a go.

To be honest id try varget, 414 or n160. What i like to do is figure out a popular powder then look at a powder burn chart and go up and down there seeing what i can get locally or already have. I know it gets some bad raps but with the lighter bullets in a 6mm i use superformance. It meters like baby powder and smells good on those still mornings.

Steve Timm used to write for Varmint Hunter magazine and he liked the 243AI with 70 gr ballistic tips a lot. He used a stiff load (I think it was 50.0 grs.) of H-414 as his favorite. I used the same load in mine and it always shot well in my Lilja barrel.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Rl-17 looks decent if Its available around here. I know a bunch of folks like the h414 flavors. I'm not particular to ball powder vs stick as I throw charges through a new Lyman generation (whatever # they're on now) which by the way I really do like. It replaced a worn out charge master. I'm kinda interested in what superformance smells like now..... I'm sitting here last day or 2 looking up experiences with imr4451. It's always available to me and if I don't have to share the powders I have for other rifles, then my supply lasts that much longer. Anyone have any experiences with it?
