243 ackley powder help

Hey guys, was wondering if I could get a little help. I was going to purchase quickload but just can't justify the cost at this time. I only have this rifle left to work up loads for. All the others are good to go. I had a little help from members recently but I did not have the specifics of the rifle yet. Have them now.

243 ackley improved. 1-10tw 26" varmint contour.
Lapua brass. Fire formed unsized case capacity with very slight meniscus= 56.2g h20
70 grain Sierra # 1507
oal of bullet seated to the lands 2.693.

Trying to stick with extruded powder. I have on hand Imr 4064/4350 and h4831sc but have access to just about any powder. If you need more info to help me out please let me know. I greatly appreciate anyone's assistance with this. First Ackley so I find it a little tougher to pick a powder.

Although I am shooting a Sako 243 using 1505 Sierra 70 gr. bullet. I have found that 8208 has given me accuracy in the ones using 38 grains. I have not, however even tried to chronograph. Published velocity is over 3400 which would be more than satisfactory for me. That is the best accuracy I have experienced with this rifle.

Thanks for the suggestion Lenard. Looking for good case fill and a slower burning powder to try to ease throat erosion a bit. Velocity will be 2nd to accuracy for me as well.

I run Varget in my 14tw with the 70 grain BlitzKing. That said I would be exploring the 4064. Nobody, not even QL, can tell you how much. P/M me for the amount of Varget I'm running.

Thanks guys for the feedback. Dusty- thanks! You seem to have many loves.. Lol. Trying to narrow this down to perhaps 2 powders to start with. Pm sent to Mr. Majestic. I know quickload can't predict perfection or give you all the answers....

I would have thought h1000 would be more appropriate for the heavier 6mm projectiles. Is it too slow for the 70gr Sierra?

Just a tip here as this seems to be going around a lot lately. Just because a powder has a slower burn rate does not mean it is easy on barrels or does not burn HOT as a faster powder. VV N560 and N160 are the perfect example. One has an extremelyHigh BTU while the other is about as low of a BTU as you can find. yet they are the same burn rate. The Energy Potential are quite difrent.

Sorry to get off topic.

I ran Varget with My 70gr class bullets. and R22 for 95gr Class bullets in a 243AI.

Looks like your speed demons for Powder (via Quick Load that is) are going to be Norma MRP, IMR 7828SSC, Ramshot Hunter, N560, N150, 4350, R19, IMR 4831, R19, R22, H100V, Magpro. All over 3500fps ish depending on your particular set up.

I would Try H4350 or H4831SC for a lower pressure combo that still has a lot of speed and good Load Density.

I am going to have to do a load work up on my 1:10 twist 243 AI as well. Looking to shoot the 87gr Berger VLD this time around. Once I get the new stock finished and beaded and that has been real slow... real slow.
Good luck sir

Yea if you were talkin about barrel life disregard my posts. When i talk powders i talk accuracy with complete disregard for barrel life. Dont let anybody sway your accuracy by the thought of getting 32more rounds on a barrel. Itll be marginal in the accuracy dept by then anyway and you didnt choose a 243ai for its reputation of long wonderful barrel life did you?

Dusty Have you ever tried Ramshot Hunter? The reason I ask is that I have a 6SLR Match Rifle that I tried it in with 95gr Match kings and it hammers with that load. I see it is at the top of the speed list again for the 70's in the AI as well. Might be worth a look see?

Yes, very good point Dusty. I didnt chose it for barrel life. RussT, man i appreciate the education. I'm not an amateur, but don't know it all either. That's what's nice about quickload. All the info not found in manuals. One would pick a slower burning powder with the assumption it would be easier on your setup then faster powders and give you a more even pressure as compared to faster powders. That's why it's so hard to pick from a dozen or so appropriate powders for a wildcat or ai chamber. Im not sure what increased accuracy has to do with barrel life? Increased speed vs barrel life...sure. But I don't care if this thing goes 1800 rounds or 2200. They make barrels for a reason. Good discussion, thanks for the help guys.

As a side note. When getting involved with powder btu in relation to the amount of powder burned and where in that barrel it's all burned, I don't have the mental capacity to determine one vs. another. Those folks that can are most certainly better then I.

No russ i got bit by ramshot when it first came out- the one for ppc size cases. Touted as the best thing ever. I bought a bunch, it sucked so bad i didnt even try it in a hunting rifle just gave 44.5lbs to a buddy for a 223 and never asked about it. Figured it sucked so bad we just wouldnt mention it. I havent seen it in his shop either. I just never think to try it mainly cause i dont have a stocking dealer nearby

I was told H1000 as well from the guy who I got mine from. I use H4350 for fireforming and that load hammers but I'm using 105 gr bullets
