Have a barrel on the way that I am gonna have my gunsmith chamber most like chamber in a 243 ai. He doesn’t have a reamer so I will have to rent one. Most likely from 4d rentals. I am wanting to shoot the 105 Berger vlds. Mostly. Should I be ok on freebore or will I need to rent a throat reamer to. Thanks

When I built mine I used the standard reamer Manson has. I don't remember the free bore off the top of my head but it shoots great. I am running the 105 Hybrids at a little over 3100fps with R23 and I am running them at mag length from a Ruger M77 MKII.

Thanks for the info.

I would make sure you have the correct 243AI dies before you do it. Most of the dies you see everywhere are not actually Ackley, they are 243 Winchester Imp 40% dies. They size the shoulder down smaller.

If those are the dies you have make sure you rent the correct reamer. get a print of the reamer and dies if possible. 243AI is about the only PO Ackley cartridge I have seen with this issue.

This^^^^. Also, I would talk to your smith about bullets and magazines. Not sure what your use case is. I like aics mags with the binder plate removed. Your smith surely has a 6mm throating reamer. If you can keep the bullets out of the donut area, that is ideal, but I have also had really good luck seating bullets deep in the case with short freebore reamers.

I consulted Dave at Pacific Tool, asking what freebore to use if wanting to shoot 87gr Vmax and 105gr Amax bullets. He recommended 0.080” so that’s what my reamer was ground to produce.
