.243, 6mm SLR & 6mm CM - slow burning powders

I have been reading all the posts on the 6mm SLR and the 6mm CM on all the attributes. Seems that the biggest attribute is barrel life and that seems to be more centered around the use of slow burning powder. If this is the case, would it stand to reason that the same gains could be achieved in the .243 Win with the use of the same powders? Has anyone tested this?
Thanks

If you use slower powders in any cartridge the barrel will last longer. There is nothing mystical about the 6 SLR as compared to the 243Win. My .243 pushes the 105s at around 3250-3300 fps. I use N160, the barrel has 1,600+ on it and is still shooting strong. John says he has barrels at 2k or more that shoot just fine. As Bryan Litz told me if you make something sound better and get people to believe it suddenly it is better. 60k psi in a 6mm bore everything gets torched, the cooler the powder the longer the barrel will last in any cartridge. You run N165 in a 6.5x284 you can get 2,500 as that is what a friend of mine Tom Myers got from his.

Nowind -

Howdy !

Take as info only:

I am using " slow " powders ( for the case capacity ) in my 6mm wildcat ..... " Deep 6 ".

Case capacity H2O:
Deep 6 51.2gr
.243Win 54gr
6mm Rem 55gr

I'm shooting a chuck full case of IMR 7828 or almost completely full case of RL-22.
I have not gotten to the end of this barrel's life, yet... but can say that accuracy has been superb
( for me ).

43.7gr under Sierra 95Mk nets 2,950fps from a 29" barrel .

I'm a believer in " high load density ", which has worked well for me ( my loads / my guns ).
And yes, I am aticipating pretty good barrel life.

My experience with 6SLR (2 barrels, both 26") is you shouldn't expect over 3000fps using H1000. With just as much H1000 as would fit in the case (drop tube, tamping, compressed load), both barrels were hovering right around the 3000fps mark with 105 hybrids.

Perhaps 115s might go a little faster as their increased mass would allow pressure to build a little more.

No wind

Keep in mind that all SLOW powders are not easy on barrels. Some are hotter than others and that needs to be put out as well. For example N560 is really hot and will burn out a throat pretty dern fast. Yet H1000 or even N160 are a lot cooler burning in the slow burn rate category. Joe Hendricks article on the subject is a little miss leading this respect.

Just because its slow does not mean its not HOT. Very rude way to describe it but I think you will understand.

+1 to what Russ said. We both went down this road a long time ago. (I hate gettin' old Russ) To get max bbl. life, you need to know the BTU rating or heat of explosion/potential rate. This is easily found on QuickLoad.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd
