24" 284 win velocities

Hey all,
With H4831 do you think i can get 2850 fps from a 168 grain bullet and around 2730 fps from a 180 out of a 24" barrel? This gun will be thorated for the 195 grain berger so i wont be using up much case capacity with the 168 or 180 grainers. ;D

I have a 26" barrel with a 220 freebore, and I get right at 2800 with 175 SMK's. This is not a max load, but its close. 55.5gr 4831sc is what I use. This barrel was 28" and I lost right at 70fps when it was cut down to the 26" length. Hope this helps.

No
Berger shows 2771fps with a 168 and 2678fps with a 180 using H4831 SC (pages 611 and 612) from a 24" bbl.

P.S. Something very interesting. JSIMONH says he gets 2800fps for his 175SMK and that’s down 70fps. Berger shows a 93fps difference for the 12 grain difference between the 168 and 180. So if you subtract about half of the Berger difference (6 grains going up from 175 to 180) in FPS from 2800, you get 2754fps. Then, if you subtract another 70fps (jsimonh loss in velocity to go from 26” down to 24”) you get 2684fps from a 24” barrel using 4831 SC. Again Berger shows 2678fps. That's a difference of only 6fps.

jsimonh, I will have .255 freebore, i think with your velocities i should be right on track with my guessed velocities.

glo, are the velocities of the berger manual from a sammi spec throat?

I have no idea. I just looked through the manual. No mention of any SAAMI specs that I saw. Only that load development was made by using “...handloading software and live test fires.” Page 10. However, I find their load development to be as close to what I get from my firearms of any reloading manual I have ever had.

My numbers using Load From A Disc based on an MV of 2700fps show: 57.0 grains H4831; load density of 104.1%; peak pressure of 55,000cup (65478psi). This using a 180 grain Berger VLD with a seating depth of .603”, COAL of 3.100” from a 24” barrel.

This would be considered an over pressured load, beyond SAAMI specs. SAAMI for a .284 Winchester Pmax for the average individual is 54,000cup (63,962psi).

For the above individual at 54,000cup (63,962psi) would be an MV of 2676; 56.4 grains H4831 and a load density of 103.2% with same bullet, seating depth, COAL and barrel.

No sir I don't. You have to have every detail for accurate results with it. A case water capacity is part of it. It works well but is also work to get the information for accurate response. I think they sell for about $50 and I'm told it's money well spent. Mike

COAL with 180 grain berger will be 3.275 touching the lands.

I think you will need to use H4350 or RL 17 to get those velocities. the RL17 I think is your best bet, but not everyone likes the RL powders. my barrels on 284's have always been a lot longer but I think your gonna be a little short with the 4831.

Oh I think H4350 is definatly a fast powder than 4831 in the .284 check out my post on my latest testing.
My old .284 was shooting 2933 with 53.5 grains of H4350 and a 180 there is NO WAY your gonna get that speed out of H4831sc.

No , no , and no . What are guessed velocities anyway ? Are they kind of like wished for velocities ::) ? Good luck getting anything past 2700fps with a 180 in a 24 inch barrel , and hopefully you have a good chrono and aren't guessing ! With a 24 inch barrel you'll likely see better velocity with a double base powder like Re-22 or Re-19 . Careful how you approach any max load with the 284 . This cartridge is a bit slow about exhibiting high pressures ! By the way Re-22 is similar to H4831 , and Re-19 similar to 4350 . Both H4350 and Re-17 are too fast for 180gr. bullets . If you're doing a new chamber go 284 Shehane much easier on the brass and can maybe get you another 100fps , maybe .

LCazador,
yes i have a chrono but i dont have the rifle yet so i am trying to figure out what i can get out of it safely, guessed numbers are numbers i came up with from researching velocities others are getting with similar barrel lengths.

dragman,
If i can get 2675 safely i will be happy.
