22X47 Lapua

Thanks for the thread. I have the bug and you have built what I've been wanting to build. I have a 6.5,25 & 6 x47, so it will be easy to load for a 22x47.
Thanks....I feel your "pain"......

3 peas in a pod......22x47 - 6x47 - 6.5x47

What kind of velocity do you get from the 22-204 you pictured with the 80 grain bullet?
Two different 24" Kreiger 4 groove tubes are at 3025 FPS each.

One 26" Rock 5R is at 3115 FPS, but likes a half grain more Varget than the other 2.

For reference, a couple other 22" barrels are at 3075 with 75 VLD's.

Update to the thread.......

Went to Montana for a coyote hunt this fall to give the new 22x47 Lapua it's maiden voyage in the field.

I had high hopes for the 80 grain Berger VLD's, but at 3370fps, they're probably not the first choice for saving fur. They do a fantastic job at 3025 in my 22-204's , but the extra speed out of the Lapua takes it to a new level.

It did do a great job of killing. Penetration and expansion were not an issue at any angle, & broadside behind the shoulder exits weren't bad. I was out there before the hides were prime, so it really didn't matter to me except a clean kill. I had my 6x47 Lapua along just in case......

Alf
Thanks, I always like to see coyotes on the ground.
It's nice to see what bullets and calibers work on coyotes.
What part of MT. did you hunt ?

Thanks.....north central.....

I love mine. Tested the 80.5 (3345 FPS from a 22”) on a few coyotes and it sure knocks them flat. I am mostly a contest hunter, so it’ll really get stretched out for the state handcalling champs first part of February.

Alf,would you mind sharing a bit about your experience with the 22-250AI?
Did you use Lapua cases, heavy bullets and barrel length, speed.
Thanks,I'm kinda on the fence between the 22x47 and the 22-250AI,I'm sure they are not that different but I'm curiuos about your thoughts.

Mine was a 23" Rock 8 twist, Lapua brass, and load work initially was a 75 Amax at 3500 even. Killed 2 coyotes, but on the 2nd one, the bullet splashed big time on a 210 yard quartering at me angle.

Back to the drawing board with 75 VLD's, and found best accuracy at 3450. Never hunted it again, as it ended up being a victim of misguided downsizing......

I see the 22x47 as giving up little to the 22-250 AI, & no hassles of fire forming.

When I was first working with my 20Tactical improved I had a young coyote who came in and stopped at about 80 yards, bullet splashed and he ran to about 200 yards and looked back I was able to drop him with the second shot.I wound up dropping the load down to 4000 with the 40Berger
and it has worked great ever since.I hate to wound an animal like that, even a coyote.Pretty sure that was a V-Max too.Been thinking I would like a bigger 22 for the way out yonder coyotes.

Alf,

Any issues with doughnuts or neck turning??

Neither is really an issue to deal with, just curious is all......

Thank you for the update, Al! Looks like you had a good hunt - reminds me of my, "old days"! :)RG
