22x284 Norma

Anybody ever done a rifle in this caliber. Time for a new varmit gun so just thinking this would be excellent speed with 80 and 90 grain bullits . I know barrel life would suck but I don't care about that. I don't care about saving fur. I wanna knock the hell out of coyotes so let me know your experience. Thanks

I know Greg Tannel built one years ago,for his own coyote rifle. He then rediscovered the 20's like the rest of us and started messing with them too.
He even made a 6WSM awhile ago, just cause he can change barrels cheaper and faster than the majority of us can.I always liked the idea of a 22-284,but we built a 6-284 for myself, because it is so much more "practical":D

P.S. Give Greg a call,he loves to talk about coyotes and rifles,he can tell you about his 22-284,he will tell you the truth, the good and bad, stick firm if it is what you want.

Another thought, have you read the thread on Fredos 220Redline yet?
I would be right in line with that one if I had your same objectives and thoughts on decimating coyotes;)
Matt
P.S....and I do

Just noticed you are in Gillette, you may also want to talk with Chuck MacIntosh and Ernie Bishop,if you are a shooter up there you may know them already.Ernie posts here once in awhile.

Badger Bob shoots one out to 1200 yards on steel targets. It does a very good job with Sierra 80 grain bullets. I don't know if he ever shot a coyote with it. His is built with a 9twist barrel. On my short list of future projects.

Thanks for the replys guys. I'm just thinking it would be a excellent coyote thumper. I do know chuck and Ernie so might visit with them a little. And good to know that a reamer can be had. So how hard can a 80 grain be pushed out of this caliber.

The problem with the big cases 224s shooting heavy bullets is that the fast twist needed starts causing bullets to come apart before reaching the target. I only went as far as 3700fps in 8” twist barrel with 80gn pills and 3500 FPS in 7” twist with 90gn pills and started getting bullet blow ups too regularly.
With the high velocities you can run a twist rate maybe 1/2” slower than with say a 223 but that is not enough to help. If I built another one it would be a 9” twist to shoot the 75gn Amax or a 12” to shoot the 60gn Vmax at warp speed.

I also think you’ll have jackets tearing off at those speeds.

I’m shooting a 22x47 now, 3345 with the 80.5 from a 22” barrel.

In an 8 twist, I’ve seen people post on here (legit people) that they have lost bullets in the 3500 range with a 1:8.

22-284 can be done... my old Smith said he got 700 rounds out of one though. Ouch.

22 creedmoor would push the limits of the bullets and still feed slick as owl shit.

Something to think about....

22-284's were built starting about 1963 . DR. Edgar Eichorn of Burroughs Corp . in Cal. made some very Heavy Jacketed Bullets ( around 31.6 Gr. he called "Hummingbirds " , and also 50 Gr. Bullets with Heavy Jackets ) . P.O. Ackley made the Barrels : 1:25.6 for the 30's and 1:14 for the 50's . The Hummingbirds went 5350 FPS . Robert Hutton and Al Barr also did some experimenting with 30 Gr. Bullets in a Swift and VERY light Bullets in a 30-378 around 1960 . The velocities were impressive . That was a long time ago , and I don't recall any reports on Barrel Life .

All good information so thank folks. The bullets coming apart was something I worried about. I shoot a straight 22-243 now for a coyote getter now and it's about toast so just kinda starting to toy with thoughts of a new hot rod. Maybe it would be better to go with 22-243 ackley. I will do some reading into the 220 redline also. Keep the knowledge comin. Thanks.

I had one about 25 years ago. Got a Savage 112 BV-SS in 223, had it rechambered to 22-284, and just shot JLK 80gr VLD's. It was a 1:9" twist, but at 3600 +/- it was a good half-mile Rockchuck rifle. As with any hot rod, the key is to not let it get hot. It is NOT a volume cartridge.

Ask me about my 22-378 Wby AI some time. 240 rounds or thereabouts...:)

I done some reading on that 220 redline. That sounds impressive also. I guess when I get something put together I will report what it will do. Thanks again folks.

Do you have any contact info for Greg? Thanks

Great thread huh?I also think a 22-243AI would be very interesting,I really like the idea of a big 22 that allows the use of a Lapua case:)

Wingnut -

Was wondering what "expansion ratio " you might end-up with.

I consulted Homer Powley's " expansion ratio " chart, seen in the " Guns & Ammo 1974 Annual "
( " Powley Papers " ).

FWIW:
In a 28" .224" cal barrel, a sample charge of say 57gr powder, would render an expansion ratio of 5.

As presented in the article, Powley's expansion ratio graph shows rapid reduction in the ratio as charges increase towards 60gr.
