22x 47 Lapua

Thinking about building one on a 8 twist barrel for hunting and shooting. Looking for input on caliber as far as accuracy and case prep. I have a 6.5 x 47 and a 6x47 on the way, just thinking about a 22x47 for next build. All input would be a help. Thanks Ed.

I've had a 22X47 L for a couple of years now. Savage Target Action, 26" Krieger barrel, 8 twist and NF scope. Accuracy is very good, at least on a par with other fairly large case .22 CF's like the .22/250 Rem, .22/250 AI or .220 Swift. Case capacity is a bit larger than the .22/250 Rem and smaller than the .22/250 AI, so velocity potential falls between those two cartridges. Case prep is a different story though. While dies for the 6.5X47 L and the 6X47 L are off the shelf items and reasonably priced, .22X47 L dies are only custom so far as I have been able to find. Big $$. Since Lapua .22/250 Rem brass is available I would probably go with another .22/250 AI (I have two already) instead of the .22X47 L due to the much easier to find and less expensive dies. If you must have a .22X47 L then by all means go for it. Great cartridge! Just be aware of the cost and availability of dies. Also Lapua .22/250 Rem brass is cheaper than 6.5X47 L, a lot cheaper. Good Shooting! Vic

I have two 22x47 rifles; one is a sporter based on Savage 10 action (1-8" ROT), that shoots 75 gr. Amax in one hole groups @ 100 yards. The other one is varmint based on Savage target action. It has 1-7" ROT and I had it built for 80 gr. Bergers. Since you have 6x47, and I presume you use 6x47 Redding S bushing die, you can you the same die for 22x47, just replace bushing. That's what I do and works just fine. For seating, you use 22-250 Forster seater, and works fine.
Some think that small primer pocket makes 22x47 inherently more accurate than 22-250, but this is subject for debates. I had reloaded the same brass with more than dozen tomes with no pocket enlargement, though.

I started the 22X47 L project without a custom die set. I looked through my assortment of dies and came up with a combination of 6X47 L, 22BR and .22/250 AI dies to neck down cases and seat bullets that was workable, even if not ideal. I was able to make up a dummy round to send to PT&G to obtain a no-turn reamer. Bullets were seated with a Forester 6X47 L Ultra or a Redding .22/250 AI seater. (My RCBS .22/250 Rem seater was not suitable as the 22X47 L case was too large to fit.) I was able to reload initially using this combination to get started shooting. I don't use a bushing die to load for the 6X47 L so that was not an option. I do have a Lee .22/250 Rem collet die that I use for neck sizing after the cases are formed. I also don't like to neck down cases a large amount with bushing dies. It takes several rather expensive bushings to neck down in small increments and a lot of work. I've done it for other cartridges and consider it a royal PITA. If the shooter doesn't already have an assortment of suitable dies for other cartridges does it make sense to buy some that may or may not work rather than just buying the proper dies and be done with it? The 22X47 L is a fine cartridge, but it does have some drawbacks that may not be obvious. Good Shooting! Vic
