I am really interested in these 22 ppc chamberings. I picked up a nice used 22 ppc .100 short barrel from a good friend of mine, and i am gearing up to shoot it. What i have noticed here on this great site is the lack of 22 ppc info. Info like what powders are working the best, whos making the best 22cal barrels, and what 22cal 52gr bullets are hot right now. I dont know if there is much appeal for these chamberings, but it sure has my interest. Maybe we can share some info about the 22 ppc here. I figure i will start with 4895 for the barrel i have, but if that doesnt work out im not real sure what i will try next? N133, or 335?? Any info you fellas might have obtaining to the 22 ppc please feel free to share! Thanks Lee

Identifying what's hot in .224 cal.used in competition is kind of difficult when very few of them are used. Probably the most sought after .224 match bullets are Bill Forresters, but good luck getting any of them. Mike Rattigan might be the one to talk to, as I believe he was the last to win the FISS with a .22 cal.
I would look into the .220 Beggs.

skeet- you seem to suffer the same malady that affected me when I started shooting competition. I was not satisfied with just one match rifle or discipline, I just had to build several in short order......well, to paraphrase the old saying " builder of many comp. rifles- master of none". Perhaps you are more adept at multi-tasking, but I find trying to keep just two rifles in competitive tune consumes all my range time.

skeet, i have a 22 Waldog .100 short I use Berger 52 gr match moly, 28grs Bridgier 3032 and 205m start lower and work up hope this helps Mark

Re: 22 ppc, 22 ppc .100 short, 22 ppc .080 short,

I have a great 6ppc and a great 30 br. thats about all i am shooting at this time. I am a bit recoil sensitive and i feel like the 22ppc short has a lot to offer. I will always keep a 6ppc barrel around but i am going to make the move to 22ppc for the obvious benefit. I sold most all my rifles so i could build a couple on BAT actions and quality glass. Its the best move i have made thus far. I do have a long range rifle but i have yet to play with it, as these ppc's really have my attention at this time, as does the 30 br. I like small eggs and i like the challenge or reading wind flags, so for now im sticking with the ppc stuff/30 br. Mr jackie schmidt just broke a world record bag with his 30 br at a group shoot this weekend, thats pretty cool stuff!! Lee

LHSMITH I got to thinking about what you said, and i suppose you are correct. I spent 10 years traveling and competing in sporting clays, and i was really serious about winning too. To be real honest i got real tired of all that and it started becoming a more of a job than a hobby. I did quit well making the state team a few times among other accomplishments. With this rifle buisness i am way more laid back. I want to win dont get me wrong but it really isnt all about that for me. I enjoy having something to fill my time with and i have always enjoyed shooting so this is a great escape for me. My buddy i shoot with gives me a little grief because i dont even go look at my targets on the wailing wall at the shoots. I just enjoy the people the rifles i guess. Ive done the serious competition and i really didnt enjoy it if i get real honest with myself. this is more for fun with me. Like i said i love to win and succeed but im going after it a bit different this time around. Heck I've already won a couple pieces of wood so im doing just fine. But yes sir you are correct. if i would focus on one rifle and one discipline i would be better off. I appreciate your reply LH and i like reading your stuff! Thanks man!! Lee

Re: 22 ppc, 22 ppc .100 short, 22 ppc .080 short,

I had the pleasure of meeting Bill forrester in st Louis. he is a nice fella and funny to boot! He seems to have this 22 stuff figured out. One fella i know made a gesture to bill about having some of his bullets and the response was mute! LOL!! Bill also has his own reamer and i have a feeling it is a bit different than anyone else's? I also talked with Mike in st Louis. Mike decided to shoot his 6ppc at that shoot as he felt the humidity was causing a bit of irregularity. So it is important to have a good 6ppc barrel or two on hand but i do feel like the 22ppc stuff is very effective at the right time, or condition. and who knows if Mike had a bit more time maybe he could have gotten his 22 stuff to shoot properly in the heat and humidity of missouri?
I had a 22br that shot pretty darn well, and i really enjoyed the lack of recoil that came with it. It might not have been ppc accurate but it was close. I sold that rifle and all my other non BAT rifles so i could go exclusively with BAT, and of course tom Haverkamp new action. Tom is a good friend of mine and i want to see him succeed with this life's project of his. It will be a 6ppc when completed.
I ask about powders because Mike seems to think a .100 short is a bit to much for N133. I didnt think to ask him about any other powders. He shoots N133 in a .080 short 22ppc from what i gathered. Lee

Exactly my point. If you believe going to a .224 will keep you in "The Zone" , and all other attempts to tame the 30 BR and 6 PPC fail, by all means go for it.
I believe George Kelbly has shot a .220 Russian for years at the Super Shoot.
Again, don't overlook the new .220 Beggs.

Greg,
we have emailed on this subject a couple of times and I have been doing research in this area...I have talked to several people on this subject, all of which are somewhat to very knowledgeable. As a matter of fact I just got done with a 2 hour phone conversation with a good friend in Montana and we talked at length about the virtues of this and that concerning the various 22's out there. He shoots a HV and a rail in 22 Waldog. Drop me a line on my email sometime and we won't use too much bandwidth here...We could solve most of the worlds problems that way as well or give me a call, I'll send you my number in an email.

Has any one realized we all go around searching for one definitive answer to lifes questions.
It doesnt matter the topic, or area of life in question.
From babies, barrels, to woman ..men want answer
Guess what!..
There are no definitive answer in this life time..no secret book, no smart all knowing being exists for guidance
So just stop!..stop thinking, and just enjoy. When your groups open up..clean your gun, seat your bullet longer and get back in the game..
If that doesnt work..guess what..new barrel time..next subject please.
Some wont like it, but that is how ive learned to cope with the question, that has no answer.

Relax your grip on life, no need to white knuckle your way thru it.
Instead of focusing on the difficulty like that space between the end of your barrel, and the targets..your worrying about barrel life..
Stop that..focus your next shot
God bless and safe shooting

@boltfluter

I guess I just assumed that a 52 gr bullet would be the choice for a 22. Obviously, you feel that heavier is an advantage? Can't remember ever seeing that before. Thanks.
Richard,
Sorry, my bad! Yes, a 52 gr Berger is correct. I seem to have 6mm PPC on the brain for some reason. Focus man, focus! Lol.
I shot more groups in the 1's with that little .22 Waldog than any other cartridge that I have ever owned. Great little round.

Yep,
The Waldog is the most accurate round I have ever shot also.

Can you tell me what powder and charge weight you were using?

If you can recall, what powder and charge weight were you using?
The Waldog is not picky at all.

23.5gr of N133 in the summer here in Western Colorado
25.0gr of N133 when it is cool.

If I want to really keep up with the big dogs at a group match, sometimes I will run it up to max capacity with a slow pour and a 6" funnel using N133.

N130 is also a good powder for the might Waldog.

LT 30 and LT 32 both work well also

I will get back to this thread in a bit, I just came in the house to warm up. I am heading back out to finish tuning up the '72 land cruiser (F engine) now.

CW

Edit to add info

In my Waldog, 23.2-23.6gr of N130 shot well.
As did 24.4gr.

N130 will bite you if you run it hot......... N133 is much more civilized in this regard.
