22lr rims

What is the best way to measure rim thickness and do you just shoot them in batches of equal thicknesses. When doing this is the accuracy consistent from round to round - is it worth the time sorting by thickness? Comments and or results would be greatly appreciated.

Go for it. Like I said Hornady makes a rimfire rim thickness gauge. While you’re at it you could weigh them and measure the OA length.

If you want cheap without having to buy something just to see if you can actually see any results. Use a 223 casing or any 22 centerfire case. Cut mouth square measure oal. Then slide in your 22lr into 223 case measure oal subtract the numbers for rim thickness.i measured a box of 50 and tested then shot a box of 50 not measured also weight sorted 100 i seen no difference in accuracy i just shoot ammo you cant tell on the weight if its bullet brass powder primer or lube thats different. Good luck in your shooting. I have also did a test on damaging 50 rounds shooting a group and a 50 shot group with undamaged bullets. For my rifles accuracy at 50 yards the results were negligible. Maybe 100 yards i could have seen something jump out

I measured 250 rounds of Midas plus and found the rim thickness ranging from .021 -.021.5, .022 - .022.5 .023, .023.5 i will shoot during the 50 yard matches and repot back these are all of the same lot that I have shot 5 250's with 16,18,19,19 and 20x. I was curious if the rim thickness sorting will up my x count. Stay tuned.

I found that measuring and sorting by rim thickness on bulk ammunition made an easily measurable difference in grouping ability, with the thicker groups shooting more accurately. I also foung that measuring high quality ammo rim thickness didn't make a significant improvement, so don't bother.

2500x with a mueller barrel - left port right bolt, 2oz jewel trigger and athlon 10x40x56. Shoots great just working on the good ole X count.
Sounds like my rifle except for the scope. Have you shot an ARA UL target?

I don't know what that target is. I shoot the local match here with the sighters on top and then the 25 circles for score. Just new at this sport and I love it. The X's really makes a person focus! Adds new meaning to aim small miss small -lol.

The problem with sorting, is knowing if it works. Until you can mark your ammo and call your flyers, it’s almost pointless.

I sort a lot of 22 shorts because there is very limited choices of ammo any more. Rim thickness, base to ogive sort headspace and engraving depth. Both are important. Weight sorting can make a much bigger difference than both.

Concentricity probably makes more difference that all of the above.

Just depends how far you want to go to find those 2-3% of unexplained flyers in high end ammo. Sadly first you need to be able to identify it as truly unexplained.

I tested the sorted (rim thickness) and as you all have said good ammo makes no difference in sorting - My rifle like Midas Plus.
