Strike depth for 22lr ammo

https://www.eleyammunition.com/ultra-extreme-long-range-round/ Eley is marketing a new 22lr cartridge, Utra Extreme Long Range, which should soon be available in the 2nd quarter of 2024. Eley's recommended specs are a headspace of .040”-.041” and a strike depth of .012”-.015”. Is strike depth the distance the firing pin extends beyond the bolt face when fired or is it the depth of the indentation left on the rim by the firing pin? There would be a difference to the extent the unfired rim thickness is a few thousandths less than then headspace.

There will be snaps/FTF at 0.012" depth and they will not start to go away until you get to around 0.0145", unless they have greatly changed something with the brass which I doubt. My general minimum across all brands of ammo is to be about 0.015" as measured off the back of the FP. As long as depth is consistent, you will likely see the same results on target with strike depths between 0.015" - 0.022". Getting it consistent being the key.

Like MrG52D states above, 0.040-0.041" headspace will gain you nothing but a headache when you want to try some other ammo brand later on. 0.043" - 0.044" works just fine for every ammo out there and will work fine for this too.

Perhaps but cannot imagine anybody building around a single ammo, especially given their recent issues.
I can see where limiting a rifle to one ammo would make it tough on the shooter, glad my rifle isn't setup that way.

Sounds like Eley is telling how to get best performance from their ammo and not to concerned about ammo from another maker....which is also understandable on their part.

Maybe they're thinking of Bleiker and Grunig, where bolt internals can be changed to alter headspace. From memory Bleiker were setting headspace to 0.039in at one point, and recommended a second bolt centre for use with Lapua or RWS.

They might also be suggesting a shim, cheap and totally removable. Remember most of Eley's customers around the world don't have their rifles built to order.
