22lr muzzle velocity

If a rifle has a velocity of 1200fps at what yardage does it go transonic, I know there are variables figure no wind and 40grn slug, can anyone ballpark it?

OK, I admit I nicked this info from the interweb...but I have read that some ammo drops to subsonic at only 50 yards (ish).
"For MOST 22 LR, 75 yards is the magic number. With the exception of Match ammo, MOST 22 LR, fired from a rifle, is supersonic- out to about 75 yards. As it drops back into subsonic speed, the shock wave that HAS been on the nose of the bullet is sliding down the bullet. As it drops off the heel of the bullet, it sorta flicks the base of the bullet, giving it a bit of yaw- and accuracy goes to crap. MATCH ammo is subsonic from the muzzle".

Here's a screen shot of my shooter app - data was gathered using a Labradar and a chrony shooting Lapua Biathlon -X thru my Vudoo. The density altitude on this day was around 5500' and ambient temp was 87°F. I notice this distance is quite often the norm for me - highlighted 1049 f/s at 65 yards is where is goes transonic - I believe there may be a little change in accuracy at 75 out to about 90 yards but the 100 yard group is very respectable.

There is no exact answer to your question because the speed of sound varies with air density. Air density is affected by temperature, humidity, and altitude.
Some rough calculations with my ballistics program put it at 20 to 30 yds depending on weather. I'm 710 ft above sea level. Humidity runs 40 to 100%. Temperatures range from 60 to 80 degrees.

A .22LR round with an MV of about 1200 fps will be around the speed of sound after travelling approximately 30 yards. It's not easy to be more precise without knowing more, especially about temperature and altitude.

The speed of sound in air is about 1125 f/s at sea level at 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

Technically, as soon as it leaves the muzzle.

Trans-sonic, the transition speeds accelerating or dropping into super/sub sonic is basically 9-1300 fps.
