22br

ric: Have a Shilen 12 twist on my 22BR, limit it to 60 to 64 gr (Berger) gr. max weights and am very happy with that combo. Never use it beyond 300 yds., get something "bigger" for the longer distances, like my 6BR's. ;)

looking at a new barrel for a panda action,22br. what would be the best twist, for varmiting?

Pick the bullet/bullets you want to shoot first.

Then pick the twist.

I agree with Alf, pick the bullet style and weight that you want to shoot and let that determine your rate of twist. My 14 twist McClennen will handle bullet weights to 55 grains with no problem but the 40 & 50 Gr,pills shoot the best. 50 Grain V-Max will easily kill P-dogs to 500yds, beyond that I personally step up to a 6MM. Also 40 and 50 grain bullets can be driven almost to 22-250 velocities with much less powder and longer barrel life.

My 12tw Shillen loves both 55 & 60gr Vmax's pushed by H4895, I'm partial to the 60 grain bullets as they buck the wind a little better and have no problem shooting out to 500yds.

I have heard several folks say that the 60gr v-max is the hardest hitting prairie dog bullet there is. If thats the case the 12 twist would be the best bet. But yes the boys above are correct. determine the bullet or bullets that you would like to shoot then order a benchmark barrel!!! Lee

Folks I agree and in most cases I do develope my own loads. But in my case I purchased my 22br used from a gentleman who is no longer shoots p-dogs. This trued 700 was built by "Hall of Fame" Shooter/Gunsmith Howard Dietz". it wears a 1.300 dia full bull 29"- 12tw Shillen, 2oz Jewell, set in a straight grain walnut pillar/glass beeded MBR stock by Richard Franklin. This rifle weighs right at 18lbs topped with a SIII 8-32. The gentleman who sold it to me furnished load data and 400 3x fired brass along with just over 50 loaded rounds. Upon it's first trip to the range I quickly found that this rifle was capable of consistantly producing 5 shot sub 0.250 groups with his pet load and that being a varmint bullet was that much sweeter. The one and only time I loaded it with anything other then 60 Vmax's was because I was forced to shoot 55's as 60's couldn't be found anywhere and I had a four day p-dog shoot fastly approching. I now always make sure a have a ample supply of the 60's on hand. There's a lot of truth in the ole saying, " IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT". I simply feed it what it like and enjoy the acrobatics displayed by the dogs.
