300S -
Howdy !
I wildcatted .35Remington down to .224” cal, for varmint/target use.
Case capacity was between that of a stock .22-250’, and a .22-250AI.
Case oal is 1.920”..... same as the Creedmoor, which it pre-dates by
a few decades.
The heaviest bullets I shot ( groundhogs and target work ) was Hornady 75”A”- Max. I opted for best accuracy along w/ useable energy.
40.5gr AA3100 and FED Large Rifle Match gave me 3,420 from a 28”
5 groove 1-8 . Primer change to FED Large Magnum Rifle Match boosted vel to 3,500...... w/ small opening up of groups. Again, these were not max vel loads. I did not shoot any bullets heavier than the 75”A”-Max.
.22-35 utilized an easy-to-form 26* shoulder angle, and .250” neck lg.
I used Remington-brand .35 Rem brass exclusively, and formed using a
RCBS Custom case forming die set. They also made the initial FL size and bullet seater dies.
I had no failures to feed or extract. W/ .22-35.... whether it be fired cases or unfired cartridges. My Wichita WBR1375 action was operated w/ a stock .308 bolt face, and M-16 style extractor.
Another .224” cal wildcat I had provisionally case formed is designed to fit a chamber cut by running a .22-6mm Remington reamer in “ short”; for a nominal .466” base diam.
Amongst this projects goal were: case forming using a stock case forming
die ( non-custom ), ability to load/ re-load cases using non- custom dies; and the ability to chamber a rifle for this wildcat using an existing reamer run in short ( no custom readers ). I case form using a stock (Lee ) 6.5x55 Swedish FL die w/ internals removed to allow excess brass to extrude out top of the open-topped die.
After cut-off for length, I detail trim to desired case oal,and inside neck ream/outside neck turn to arrive @ final calibre and neck wall thickness
desired.
I used Hornady dies set-up for 6mm Remington... swapping in a .224” cal seater stem; and appropriate diam neck size bushing ( for .224” cal wildcat ) in their shoulder bump/ bushing NS die.
.22-6mm Remington. (” .22 Texas Trophy Hunter “) readers can be rented.
The above .224” cal wildcat has case capacity of 49.8gr H2O, and a
.301” lg neck; along w/ a 26* shoulder angle. This would help keep the powder combustion “ turbulence point” inside the neck, to aid barrel life.
I formed sample cases using Norma 7x64 Brenneke brass, which has the required .466” base diam. 7x64 is a rimless case, and is .308 bolt face compatible; along w/ being LR primed.
