22BR sizing question

I bought a set of foster fl sizing dies and some 6br brass. I got things rolling tonight and started to size the brass. I have noticed a slight donut at the base of the neck. will this affect anything? if so what do i need to do? I do not have a neck trimming tool. Whats the scoop? Lee

It won't hurt a thing and it should flatten right out on first firing.. I have to turn my necks for a .250' nk. and I just cut right through the 'hump'. I think a bushing die is more prone to make this hump than a standard FL sizing die but I haven't found that it hurt anything.

The donut that everyone refers to, is on the inside of the neck after fireforming. The 'step' in the neck, that is there after neck sizing, is not the donut!

Ditto on Eddie's comments.

The 'step' will move to the inside after firing the case...it then becomes the 'donut'. Not that this is bad...just depends on how and if you want/need to deal with it.

For the 'step' on the outside prior to fireforming:

You need to make sure the o.d. of the 'step' is smaller than the chanber neck i.d, for obvious reasons. If it is, you can fireform the case and make the 'step' into a 'donut', turn the 'step' off before f-forming so you don't have a 'donut', or take the donut out of the inside after the case is f-formed.

For the 'donut' after f-forming:

If it's well below where the base of the bullet ends up after seating, many people just leave it alone. I don't like 'donuts' and remove them by either inside boring the necks or with a Wilson inside neck reamer that cuts to a specific size.

For most, I'd advise simply turning the 'step' off before fireforming. If you don't have absolute control over what you're doing when you take the donut out of the inside of the case neck...it's real easy to trash the cases by getting the o.d. and the i.d. of the necks on different planes relative to the centerline of the neck.

Just my experience with it. -Al

I have found if i turn my FL die down just a tad bit more in the press the ring is almost gone. I dont know if this is a good idea or not? I dont have my rifle yet so i am not sizing anymore cases until i have it. Thanks guys Lee

Also I have read were there is some run out problems when sizing down the brass. I dont have a gauge to check so i will just assume there is some. Does it help anything if i run the cases back up into the die a half dozen times while turning the brass a bit at a time? Lee

skeetlee, I shoot several 22BR's and I've found that if I first use a 22BR Form and Trim die and size the neck down in 2 steps rather than one, that I get a lot truer neck with almost no runout. Second step is to full-length size. Works for me.
