Decided to have a 22BR made for my varment gun. My gunsmith has the Dies for 22BR Rem or 22BR Norma brass cases. Am i better off going with the Norma brass cases or should i just stay with the 22BR REM brass cases? Rem brass cases ar OK but is the Norma brass case that much better? or is it that the resale value on a 22BR Norma better than a 22BR Rem? Talk to me 22br Afecionados. Gabe

Are the specs different for the Norma vs. Remington as far as case size? Just curious as I am thinking of doing a 22BR build also.

Simple answer, no brainer, with limited thought or discussion. 22 br Norma, use norma or lapua brass, very prevalent and top quality.,,the 22 br remington, if patterned off the old 6 br remington chamber is probably not even chambered much anymore. the remington chambering was for a shorter type of br case. Go with the 22 Br Norma Chamber(get the chamber specs , print, from the gunsmith for future reference) which is from 6br norma necked down to 22.
QM: 6BR Remington chambers are cut for a maximum brass length of 1.520". 6BR Norma/Lapua are cut for a maximum brass length of 1.560".
6BR Remington chambers are approximately .003" smaller in diameter, at the case head, than 6BR Norma.
Remington was the first to make the 6BR round available, Norma came along a few years later, and to prevent Norma brass from being used in Remington chambers, it was made to the larger dimensions.
Remington brass could be used in a Norma/Lapua chamber (but why would anyone want to?), but Norma/Lapua will not fit in a Remington chamber.
After the 6BR Norma became available, Lapua, in an agreement with Norma, began producing brass also.
Both are superior, far above Remington in quality. JMO.
p.s.: The 22BR is an excellent round. Had one, shot out the barrel, but do hope to have another.

Thanks for the explanation. I have a 6BR norma and knew about the 6BR Rem. I was wondering if the situation was the same with the 22BR.
It seems that these days in the case of the 6BR that almost all chamberings and casings are Norma. Is this the case with the 22 also?

QM: The parent case for the 22BR is the 6BR, so yes, whatever dimensions are on the 6BR case that is used to form 22BR (Remington/Norma/Lapua), will be on the 22BR.
Just as a note, when/if you start to form the barss: I first attempted to use a 22cal. bushing in my 6BR Redding Type S FL neck bushing die, to reduce the necks from 6mm to 22 cal. The first case was destroyed when the sharp corner of the bushing crushed the neck down like an accordian.
From that first failure I began using a standard, non-bushing 22BR FL sizing die, made by Forster. Listed in the new Sinclair 2012-B catalog, page 54, #749-004-832SE, described on page 52, at a cost of $36.95. Well worth it when you stand the chance of destroying that 6BR brass @ .85 each.
This die will do an excellent job of forming the brass to 22BR, in one easy pass, using Imperial die sizing wax.
I believe the Remington 6BR chambering is all but obsolete, with everyone using the Norma dimensions.
Have been "speaking" to a benchrest competition shooter in France, who recently had 2 6BR's chambered & they too are using the Norma chamberings.

i had problems taking the 6 br case to 22 br in one step and read on this forum about first rum 6 br case into a 22 br bullet seating die which brings the neck down a little bit. then run the neck into a redding form and trim die. i have not lost a case since. there is some runout in the neck but it is gone after fireforming. i have to turn my necks( .251 chamber) and do this as a 6 br and this slightly decreases the dia of the neck to be sized. a little time consuming, but the results are very much worth it...63 cheeks and 64 bergers are printing 3 shots in the zeros!
Do you think I could neck down to 22 cal in 3 steps using the redding neck bushing dies? I think it would work. It will be a tight neck chamber, if and more than likely, when I have it built. All the necking down that I have done in the past has been done with my old Hornady FL dies, but needless to say I don't have an old 22BR die set. My rule of thumb is not to bush down necks more than .007 or 8 in 1 step. I could definately see how a case could be screwed up going down .020 in 1 step.

I don't mind spending whatever time it takes and however many steps it takes to prep the brass. It's like anything else you do. You generally reap the rewards for th efforts you put into it. I find this particularly true with reloading. It's a labor of love.
My 6BR shoots better than I could ever believe that a rifle could shoot. Hopefully when I do this, the 22BR will be as good. I have never read any complaints about it.

Good luck with your build Gabe. I am sure I will be doing it very soon also. I think we will both be happy with the caliber selection. My only question that I would like to get an answer to, is barrel life. I am not a hot rod reloader but I don't baby a rifle either. I started a thread here and on another forum asking about it. I got quite a few reply posts, but not enough about barrel life to suit me. I would think it should be decent. It's not talked about in any posts that I have read as being a barrel burner. The 6BR is good, so I assume the 22 should be about the same. Time will tell.
