22BR Project in the Works

I am moving along on a 22BR project, fun little rifle. I had a chance to trade into a Bartlein 4G with 12" twist Varmint contour barrel. I had to dissasemble a rifle for the action, but made much sense, a fully blue printed Remington 700 SA out of GreTans shop. I chambered the barrel last night finished up around 9:30. I have ordered a Bob Hart grey laminate stock for $179.99 delivered on E-bay, and I know how to do the bedding when it arrives. I am thinking either a Sightron 24x with 2 MOA reticle or a 6-18 Meopro with BDC. I wish I could afford better glass, but life is such. I love accuracy and am getting down to a question for you guys. I know the 53 gr Hornady V-Max makes a ton of sense with the high BC and weight for speed, but am wanting to know your opinion for the ultimate in accuracy for the 40 to 55 grain bullets. What bullet seems to be forgiving and had made you proud with groups on paper. As always thanks for any and all responses, Tim

I think the bullet you mention would probably be excellent but I have had great results with Hornady , Sierra and Berger bullets in 40 to 55 grain. I am working on the Mid-South bullets for accuracy as I end up shooting a couple of thousand of them every year at prairie dogs. Gets expensive shooting a premium bullet when a cheaper bullet can do the same if it is as accurate. Also as for glass...take a look at the Vortex line of scopes. I have bought two 6.5-20x50 bdc scopes and really like them. To me they are comparable to the Vx-3 Leupold with as good or better warranty. Just some thoughts here for ya. :) Sounds like you are going to have a very nice rifle soon. let us know how it shoots. :D

Great idea on the Vortex suggestion, will look into those. I had a buddy text me about his favorite all time 22 bullet and I absolutely respect his thoughts, and was a suprise the Berger 64 grain Varmint.

I SHOOT SIERRA'S 55GR BTHP GAMEKINGS W/OUTSTANDING RESULTS AND ALSO THE 52GR BERGERS OUT OF A 12TWIST 22BR I HAVE TWO 22BR'S I REALLY ENJOY SHOOTING THEM

For me it's 52gr Berger FB. 1:8" Twist Pac-Nor for mid range. Works just as accurate for the switch barrel 1:14" on a Sako S491 22BR. My plus is they are my pick for general use in both my .223R rifles as well.

If I want something just as accurate but way more destructive I have Barnes 36gr Varmint Grenades but here they are way more expensive than Berger and harder to obtain.

my 22 BR 12 twist absolutely loves berger's 64 gr varmint bullet with n540 31.6-32 gr! i killed 24 of so ghogs in a row before missing. 60 and 63s shoot ok but the 64s are my favorite. you will love the 22 BR...i have 3.

I`m already looking at an 8 twist to add, just because!! I saw that Bullets.com has the Berger 64 and am placing my order for some of those today! lpreddick, what speeds are you getting with those, not that it really matters?

Remington Model 7, Lilja 1:14 twist, V Max 40 grain and Winchester 748 works for me. Speeds up to 4000 +. I use this gun for crow hunting out to 400 yards easy. Scope is 6.5 X 20 Leupold I also have a Vortex 6.5 X 20 both work very well. Good luck and just a note that you should love the 22BR.

Welcome Mike!

I had the stock arrive yesterday, and worked on it to fit the large diameter barrel in the factory Varmint channel, will finish that tonite and start prepping for pillar bedding. I will have an array of bullets to try. 40, 50 Nosler Ballistic Tips, 53 gr Hornady V-Max and the 64 gr Berger....too much fun!! Still must decide on an optic.

I've had great success with 40gr Nosler ballistic tips out of a 16 twist barrel upto 4400 fps. Fantastic down range performance on P-dogs
