80gr amax in a 9 twist anyone ?
has any one tried it ? I want to order some bullets , I know I can shoot the 75 gr amax , just not sure about the 80gr , thanks for any input

I have a 223AI 9 twist that will not stabilize the 80's. It shoots the 75's pretty good but will shoot the 73 Bergers and the Hornady 75BTHP exceptional. I would be willing to say it u have a 22-243AI or a so called Hotrod 22cal where u can get the speed then a 9 should stabilize 80's.

You really need a 7.5 twist for the 80 gr amax for best results. The 75 gr amax was marginally accurate in a 9 twist 22-250 I had but wouldn't shoot consistent.

How much horsepower behind the 80`s????

Might work in a hot rod .22-243AI, or the likes......

There's a big difference between whether a 9-twist barrel will marginally stabilize the 80 Amax and whether it will shoot them optimally. Even under optimal atmospheric conditions, Berger's twist rate calculator shows a 9-twist barrel as unable to stabilize an 80 Amax (i.e. Sg less than 1.0). Given that the Berger calculator is pretty conservative and with the subtle variations between rifles, it is possible that the right combination of velocity with a 9-twist barrel might just barely stabilize an 80 Amax. However, it would be so far from optimal as to be a waste of time IMO. The bullet would lose a significant amount of its potential BC, which would completely defeat the purpose of using such a bullet in the first place. Even the 75 Amax is pretty far below optimal from a 9-twist barrel. I know there are plenty that are use=ing them out of 9-twist barrels, but I've always been a big believer in using a bullet that is well-suited to the barrel that will be used to shoot it. In the case of .223 Rem, a minimum 8 or 7.7-twist barrel, or better yet a 7-twist is the way to go if you want to shoot 75-80 gr bullets with optimal stability.

75gr priv bthp shoots extremely well in the 9 twist, 77 Nosler cc almost as good , I guess the extra length of the amax is the difference , thanks for all the replies
