.224-.308 sabots twist question

Willoughby

Silver $$ Contributor
has anyone used the .224-.308 sabots ?
allmost all .308 caliber barrels are 10 twist -so any .224 projectile
would have to be lower weight ..55gr or so to be stabilized by the 10 twist barrel
is my thinking correct ?
or would it perform differently because of the sabot- & velocity
thanks in advance for any responces

Velocity is a factor in bullet stability calculations so .224 bullet fired with a sabot at speeds up to 4,000 fps would theoretically be stable. Unfortunately it's accuracy will be determined by the sabot itself and how cleanly it separates while in flight.

I haven't read many comments saying that the .308/.224 combo is all that accurate.

Now if the bullet had "fins" like the Sabot round for the main gun on an M1 Abrams, that would be another story. 8) 8)

Good luck with them. I was going to try them along time ago, but had 2 friends try them first. One guy tried factory loads and they would drive tacks at 75 yrds., but by 100 yrds. you had a 2 in. group and they opened up fast from there. The other guy loaded them and tried them in 30-30, 308 and 30-06 with about the same results.

I've never tried the sabot rounds.

However, a 1:10 twist will not be sufficient to stabilize the longer, more interesting bullets. Yes, you can make up some twist with increased velocity, however, increasing the velocity also creates the need for faster twist because of the greater air resistance engendered by the higher velocity. I doubt you could push anything much longer than a 69gr SMK in that rifle and have it stabilize.
