223AI small, but it can go long

I shot my first steel match today. All I had ready to shoot was a 223AI Savage LRPV with a CBI 8tw barrel shooting 80gr Amax. The wind was running 10 to 12 mph most for the day. The AI did very well. We shot steel at 350, 525 730, 900, and 1025 yds and a 10" bonus plate just past the 1025yd plate. I was worried I could not see my misses, (due the the small impact of the AI), and correct, I saw every round hit. You got 5 shots to make one hit. First shot hit gets 100 points, - 10 for each extra shot. I cliped a no shoot target at 530yds. My best shot of the day, I hit the 1025yd on the first shot. If you hit the 1025, you get one shot at the bonus, misses by inches. The 223AI can go long.

Outstanding, i have a 223 AI and still working on the right load, not even close to your ranges. Working on 500 yds now and doing so well.

Don't quite have the distance you do but the 600 yd. steel at my range ain't much of a challenge with mine shooting the 80 gr. A-Max and Varget! ;)

MrMajestic,

I only have 500 at my club. I got a 100 yd zero, sight settings at 200, 300, 400, and 500. then I ran this thru a ballistics program http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmtraj-5.1.cgi then adjust the speed until everything matches. That was first time at this match http://www.bangsteel.com/Home_Page.php , and my shooting past 500 prone. My chart was very close, my misses were due to wind. I have shot 600 and 1000 benchrest

I've been using an AI in the p/dog fields for 9 yrs or so...

basic 12 twist & 55 Noslers and now the new 53 V max

My Pac Nor tube now has high miles...pushing 7K rds or so

Solved that problem though..having Pac Nor build a new heavy

28" 9 twist/3 groove to replace the 12 twist bbl........the 223 is a

great cartridge..the AI is only better......

I am going to shoot the bangsteel matches sometime this year. Looks pretty fun.

Mark, I'm in wholehearted agreement with your assessment of the 223 AI. We've been shooting some precision rifle matches at a ranch in north central Ks.; one stage has 16"x18" steel plates from 300 out to 1400yds. I'd shot rifles in 6x47 Lapua & 284 Win up there, and had good results and fun with both. However, last time out, I took a little 223 AI that I'd built for myself to this match. Hey, it's run on a 'just-for-fun' basis, and the rifle was shooting Berger 90s (both LRBT & VLDs) really well, so why not? I'd gotten a good no-wind 100yd zero with several loads using bullets from H75AMax to the 90s, along with solid chrono data for each load. Ran the numbers on the point mass solver that Bryan Litz includes with his book on LR shooting, got print-outs done, and took off for the match.

There were no problems getting both hits on the plates out to 800, but I got blown off the right side with the 1st shot at 900, then sucked back off the left side with the 2nd. Got both hits at 1000, then got skunked at 1100 & 1200. Didn't see hits or miss impacts at 1300, nor on the 1st shot at 1400. I'd run out of internal scope elevation going up from the 1300yd target, and had to use reticle hashmarks to holdover for the 1400. Since I didn't see or hear anything out of that 1st shot at 1400, I held another 3MOA over for the 2nd one, and saw the impact - about 3 MOA above the target, which is set up on a hillside. When we went out to check the plates & paint over hits, we found one hit on both the 1300 & 1400yd plates. Litz's PMS shows the 90s going subsonic at around 1260yds, and I didn't know whether they'd remain stable or not past that. However, the impacts on the 1300 & 1400yd targets were uniformly round, so sign of any tipping or being unstable. PMS predicted a velocity of 1093fps at 1400; even with electronic muffs, and the wind coming from the targets towards the firing line, I didn't hear any impact at either 1300 or 1400.

But the come-ups from the PMS program were dead-on, and it's a lot of fun shooting this rifle - it's a M700 action in a McM A5 stock, 26" Krieger 1:7tw in sendero contour, Jewell HVR trigger, EGW 20 MOA sloped base, and a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 in TPS TSR rings. It's also got R-D DM BM, which uses AICS 10rd 223 mags. I loaded 80s for closer targets, from 200 out to 780yds, and used them to fireform. FF loads have been just as accurate as those put up in formed brass, so why not use the match format to get more FF'ing done?

Dennis,

What kind of speed do you get with the 90gr? What powder do you use?

Mark,
I've used N550, RL15, & PP2000MR with 90s in a 30" Palma 223 bbl, but have pretty much stuck with 2000MR in the 223 AI. N550 gives highest velocities in the 30" bbl, but I've always had to trickle-up charges with it and RL15, while 2000MR is a ball powder, and meters consistently enough to allow me to skip that tedious process. Skip to the chase - I'm running moly'd 90s 2830fps out of the AI's 26" bbl.

Mark,
Congrats on your awesome success I have a .223 AI but has a 1:14 on it I have been looking for an excuse for a 1:7.5 or so so I can really shoot the 90 grain vld's out to 1K, sounds like you had a lot of fun my friend.
Wayne.

FLATLANDER,

Tell me more about the steel match and location in North Central KS. This sounds like a lot of fun! Thanks.
