.223

Here in the land down under 223's are commonly known as rat shooters. go for a faster twist rate ie 1 in 9 or 1 in 8. You then can use some really good projectiles out to a good distance and really get into the moggy's,cats)

In my experience a 1/9 or 1/8 twist .223 won't handle the 40 gr. V-Max worth a hoot.

A 12 will do 40's quite well. I have a ten that shoots them too, although that's unusual.

I can't understand why Savage marketed their varmint gun with a 9 twist, Most PD shooters want 204 type performance which you can get with a 40 grain.

The object of the game for me is maximum splat factor, which 40 vmax at 3800 FPS delivers nicely.

I hear what you're saying, but there are a couple of factors to consider -

Not all varmint shooters are PD shooters. Those big 'ol chucks and marmots often require more penetration than a 40 gr. PD load offers. There's nothing wrong with a 1/12 .223, but a 1/9 is an excellent compromise.

Savage usually delivers what its customers ask for. In this case they overwhelmingly asked for a fast twist. A 1/9 .223 will handle bullets down to 55 gr. with excellent results. Savage has recently made a 1/7 twist available in these rifles due to the demand voiced by the long range .223 shooters.

My Savage 12FV with a 1:9 twist shoots 40 VMax to 69 gr HPBT just right.

Longest kill on a prairie dog has been 685 yards with a 40 gr VMax.

sionharris, is this rifle rebarreled, or older? According to Beretta USA, the T3 223 has an 8 twist barrel. Just food for thought.
