.223 Speed?

What kind of velocity should I expect/shoot for in a 24" heavy barrel?

75 grain A-Max's
N-140, and/or Varget.

You guys using those components, what velocities are you getting?

I just checked my load..this is with my savage model 12 VLP 1-7 26"...26.0 varget fed 205 winchester brass chono @ 3029 fps 5 shots with the 75 amax

24.50grns. Varget, Fed. Gold Medal brass, CCI 450 and 75 A Max is in my books as 2,964fps over 10 shots for avg.

yukonal,
"I'm compressing 26.0 Varget with 60 gr. V-Max's! How the heck are you getting that looooong bullet in there?"

It's do to the long throat in his 1-7" twist barrel that is expected to use longer heavy bullets...........he may even be jumping them a little.

If our rifle is an AR platform stay around around 2800, Bolt gun you can go hotter. Work up slowly, Just watch for pressure signs, then drop 0.5 grain. Larry

Accuracy Speaks, had an article listing the velocities for SMKs that give you the most accuracy. 69's 2700-2800, 77's 2650-2700, and 80's 2500- 2550. You can load them hotter, but you may suffer accuracy. I will admit that I do run them hotter and get excellent accuracy.

Well, I'll start at 24.5 and end up at 26 in 1/2 grain increments. It's new barrel break-in, so I'll chrono the most accurate loads next trip.

The compressing 26.0 with 60 V-Max's was with my AR. I looked at my notes, and I have an extra .085" to work with here. 25-26 gr Varget should be GTG.
