223 Rem Twist

Which rifle to pick for use in PD shooting using 50 grain bullets: the Savage 12 Series w/1 in 9' twist; or the Remington 700 w/1 in 12' twist? Or, at that bullet weight does the twist matter?

Either twist should be fine with the 50 gr., but with the 1-9 you will have the option of going up in weight/length to the 69 gr. when/if you want to 'reach out' to the longer distances. The 69 gr. with a near max charge of Varget will perform to 600 yds., if winds are not a problem.;)

Will you be able to shoot 75gr A-max's with a 1-9' twist or would you have to step to a 1-8'? Also what kind of range are you looking at with the 75gr pills? Thanks again.

I had a Rem 700 VS 1-12' twist, it shot the 55s super. Once I started reloading and realized how much better the heavy bullets perform, sold it immediately and got a PSS 1-9'. Now I can shoot from 50gr to 80gr with superb accuracy.

Never had much luck w/ bullets heavier/longer than the 69 gr. Sierra MatchKing, although I realize some 1-9s will do a great job. Guess a lot depends on the velocity. For heavier than 69 gr. the 1-8 twist is put to work with weights up to the Sierra & Berger 80 gr. They fight the winds better at the distances beyond 3 & 400 yd. My son competes in 600 yd F-Class with a Hart barreled 1-7, 223 & the 80 gr. is his choice after getting beat up at that distance by the wind with the 69 gr.

Right on. I'm going to be using the 75's in a .22-250AI. it should be able to push them fast enough with the 1:9. I was just wondering. Thanks again.
