.223 1-12'' twist

.223 Remington 1-in-12" twist represents a varmint barrel designed for 35-to 60 grain bullets. Don't overextend heavy bullet usage to create something your varmint rifle is NOT! 1-in-9" is another entity. Be slap-happy with what you have. A 55 grain Speer T-N-T, Nosler Ballistic Tip, Berger Varmint, and some others will slap a Coyote into Predator Heaven toot-sweet. Cliffy

I have some questions using heavier 60-65gr bullets in a factory Remington VL SS Thumb hole gun with a 1-12' twist rate. I have read that you can go as heavy as 65gr bullets with a 1-12' twist but will the barrel really stabilize these Or should I be using nothing heavier than a 55gr bullet? What bullet selection would you use? Thanks again.

Asscott,
I also have a Remington .223 with a 1-12" twist rate (VLS), and have read that 60-65gr. bullets should stabilize in that barrel. But in my rifle, 55gr. is the heaviest bullet that shoots well, with the 40-50gr. being the most accurate. Anything over 55gr. really opens groups up. As has been said, every rifle is different, and mine will not shoot the 60gr. + accurately.

BadBadger, 60 grain Nosler Partitions represent a fiery field of firepower regarding .223 Remington downrange prowess. These would represent my firepower regarding invaders upon my US lands in sneak-warfare. Should such ever come to pass, you know my sniper-select non-military fare regarding same, and I'd reload like crazy. Cliffy

Laurie rarely adds information pertinent to bettering one's shooting skills, so I discount her general info and consider her as "willing to learn." If such is the case, learn from the highly experienced shooters-handloaders regarding metric-tons of experimentation and practice at range-practice. Reloading - Handloading will set you free to experiment down-range. Still, I welcome all your accumulated knowledge. Cliffy

Holy cow Cliffy, I consider Laurie one of the best sources for advice. In fact just about every thing she says is spot on. I don't recall reading anything she posted I would argue against.

You on the other hand are almost always out in left field.

Hi Guys,

what's with the 'she'? This will come as a surprise to my wife and two children!

Laurie = Laurence (my mother was a fan of the British actor Laurence Olivier, prominent in imediate postwar movies).

Don't get 'het up about it' as we say in the North of England - people make this assumption regularly these days, and I don't get offended by the mistake.

As to what I post, I say it as I see it, and based on actual experience - as in using 64gn Bergers in a 1-12" twist 223, because that is what my rifle had and what I had to run with, just like the originator of this thread. I've never said I consider a 1-12" twist .223 ideal for long-range shooting, frequently the opposite, and have since owned both 8" and 9" twist smokepoles. I now have a 7" twist long-range .223 throated for 90gn Berger VLDs currently in the pipeline for GB National League F/TR in 2010, assuming it performs better than my .308 Barnard based Eliseo tube-gun.

Keep up the discussion! And happy Christmas to all including my friend Cliff.

Laurie,
York, England

Laurie, I only wished to garner a response from you. Cliffy Merry Christmas to you, buddy. I do read all your posts with great interest.

Laurie, I appologuise for the wrong assumption of your name/sex! I shrink numb-mouthed, but by now you know I'm a fun-loving soul who enjoys shooting and relating my findings to assist all who actually care to listen to my "blatherings." You are a great guy, both knowledgewise and humourwise. Note, I used the British-spelling for American "humor." Since my 1-in-12" twist 22" inch barrel sends 60 grain Nosler Partition bullets precisely where I aim; I tell it like I discover it, same as you do. Have a great 2010 year into prosperity. Cliffy

My 700 1-12 shoots 62 grain berger FB better than any other weight, match or varmint. My load is IMR 4895, 7 1/2 primers winchester brass with the bullet .010 in the lands @3000.

If one MUST hunt deer with a 1-in-12" TWISTER .223 Remington, the 60 grain Nosler Partition stands alone as the proper fare. No other .22 caliber bullet can produce the same CALIBER of effect out to 100 yards. Cliffy

Sorry Moorepower, I get carried away with potential deer hunters trying small stuff for big bucks. Berger 55 grain Varmint Bullets are extremely accurate for VARMINTS, like Coyotes. Currently, I'm garnering 3400 to 3500 fps muzzle velocity depending on powder charge and many other variables afield from 55 grain Bergers. Try 36 grain Barnes Varmint Grenades with RL-10x powder for 3900 plus fps in 1-in-12" twisters regarding chipsters and ground squirrels. No .223 Remington is a POWERHOUSE of efficiency pertaining to anything larger than fifty pound beasties. Cliffy
