223 Neck'd Up to 30 Cal Berger 115s Quickloads Help Please

Hello,

i am wondering out loud about the 223 case just necked up to 30 cal. No Blackout or Whisper or the short.. i necked up a case and over all measurement of the case was reduced from 1.750 to 1.7373. Water weight is 31.44 grains.

Can i someone help me with some work ups on Quickloads for this case and the Berger 115 grain FB bullet. BC is listed as G1 .289.. I don't know the over all length of the bullet, or i could give you an approx OAL for the loaded case. Suggested powders.. i am thinking that H4895 might be too slow.. what about LT-30 or AA 2230 powder? H4198?

Evening Doc,
Ok you got me...exactly what chamber do you intend to stick such a "necked up" casing in? The bullet is .30 Ca but the casing below the neck is .223, leaving the casing unsupported in a 30 CA chamber. I can't see that working at all, unless you've blown our the entire body as well as the neck. Please clarify because I'm curious. Thx!

Doc,
Ok. Now that begs another question. Won't you need a special chamber/reamer since a standard .308 chamber brass is normally trimmed to 2.005 and now that blown out .223 is 1.7373? Wouldn't that make for a hellacious long jump? Thx.

Why assume he is firing it in a 308 chamber?

I think the wildcat is called a 30 apache.

I am not forming in a 30 cal chamber.. i would be necking the brass up to 30 cal. it would be shot in its respective chamber if it is cut for it.. Instead of keeping the body taper that is in it already, i am thinking of the reamer made with the walls being straight up to where it would meet the shoulder.. which of course would shorten the over all length of the case again.. The line you see in the case neck is where the previous case had the neck turned.. i believe that this would be a good place to stop with the bearing surface of the 115's..

Sorry...I'm unfamiliar with a 30 apache. Have to look into that one. Thx for that info,

Alex

Yeah..i found that.. but i would just tad differen.. the problem with the data is that there is only three loads even listed that i could find.. and they are all with heavy bullets.. not where i am wanting to go..

Doc,

SO is it safe to say that your chamber would be pure custom and nothing that is being made/shot today? Thx

Alex

yes.. that would be safe to say.. custom chamber with a reamer that i would spec out.

Doc,
You've really got me interested now. Just did a crash course on the .30-223, a wildcat I was unaware of. And I see that PTG makes a Reamer for the .30-223 which is near what you are trying to accomplish. I'm curious if you think Dave Kiff can take one of those reamers and change the specs to your's, hence you'd have one of a kind chamber? Then of course you could put either Harrel or Whidden to work on the dies.

That is what i was thinking.. what if we called it the 30Doc! Or 30 Devildoc?

You will have to look long and hard to find anything that has not been tried at some point.
30-223 has been done in various forms. I have been around a couple of them. For all practical reasons there is not .10 worth of difference.
The 223 has been fooled with a lot some years back, super slow era so to speak. A lot was tried by folks when the 300 Whisper came about.
338 is close to a straight wall, yes it has been done, long and short.

I understand that.. but still yet.. i am seeing that the small differences don't make much.. so i will just push forward with something..

Sometimes it's not the destination, but the journey that matters. And over time. the path taken may havr been improved as well as the destination. To me, testing out what you come up with is worth every stinkin penny. And if you don't try, you'll always wonder what could have been. Knowing Doc like I do, he'll make that trip just about every time. GO FOR IT DOC!!!!!!!!
