223 muzzle brake?

For shooting colony varmints, the side discharge brakes get real old with a LOT of concussion put on your head. The radial brakes have less concussion, make no mistake about that issue. The Gentry muzzle break actually has ports slanted 15* or so forward and throws a lot of concussion forward, away from the shooter.

When shooting p. dogs, I wore foam ear plugs and electronic ear muffs so I could comfortably talk to my shooting buddy, and also hear his "plops" as he connected on the dogs.

I bought a Ross muzzle break that is self timing that has a lock ring. I found that if I played with how far the brake was screwed in and out, I was able to tune the 308 down to a single bullet hole group, with so little recoil that no one would believe it till they shot the gun(this muzzle break had the side discharge ports and holes in the Top)

When a brake sends blast forward it’s giving more recoil towards the shooter. That is why brakes send the blast back. Not sure I would call a brake that sends blast forward a brake. More like an accelerator. Lol

You can find brakes like the PVA models who have a “blast shield” that uses some of the blast itself to send the rest more away from the shooter while still being a brake.

I think it depends on what your shooting application is. If you want to see your hits (or misses), such as when varmint shooting - a brake is the only way to go. I would not even take one of my varmint rifles afield without one. If I miss a ground squirrel at distance, i want to know where my round hit. Can't do that very well without a brake - even on a .223. I have them on my 20 Practicals and even on my .17 Hornet.

If you want to try one on the inexpensive side, look at Harrels, they have them for $40 or so, with various options. I have radial brakes bored out for 6mm but they work fine on 223 based rounds and 20 cal as well. I use them for varmints (rats and pdogs), and allow me to "spot" for myself.

I like the Harrell's brakes - but do be aware they are not "finished", such as most brakes. They are meant for a gunsmith to complete them. If you are looking for one to just screw on your rifle and look good - you will be disappointed. Best to buy and hand over to gunsmith for proper fit and finish.
