223 muzzle brake?

Picked up a Howa 1500 Oryx in 223 from a guy I shoot with. I know next to nothing about Howa and I needed another gun like I need a hole in my head, but he sold it so cheap I felt like I had to get it.

It doesn't have a muzzle brake and apparently this gun doesn't come with one new. My other two bolt guns, a 6CM and .308, feel much better with a brake but not sure if the 223 will really benefit much from one.

Curious on people's experience with and without a brake on a 223 and is it worth spending a couple hundred bucks to pick one up? I will move a suppressor from my 300BLK to this sometimes and will eventually get a dedicated can for it, but thinking about picking up a brake in the meantime. Any suggestions on a good brake is appreciated too.

If you already have a suppressor, I feel that is the better option over a brake. I put brakes on all my prairie dog 223's just because I like to see my shots better, after getting cans I find them superior and will only use a brake if my suppressor is too hot to swap out during a high volume day.

My suppressor lives on the 300BLK, I can swap it over from time to time, but I'd prefer to have a dedicated one for the 223, which will be another year of waiting. The brake would basically be a placeholder during the form4 wait.

I put one on my Ruger American Predator (.223) out of pure curiosity. It came tapped for one so I figured what the heck. I do see a change in ability to mark my shots. Muzzle jump is considerably less and I seldom lose sight of the target. Only one I own, but wouldn't be against another one.

Yes a brake works well on a .223. I have one on my match .223. It's a light recoiling round and even lighter with a brake. You don't have to spend a couple hundred or more to get a good brake. The PVA Jet Blast will work great on it.

And if it's 1/2-28 threaded these are in stock.

Only 223 I ever braked was a XP-100. I could easily spot my shots in the prairie dog town.

Ross self timing muzzle brakes are an excellent option for a decent inexpensive brake, that works as well as other top name brakes I've used.

Those look pretty sweet. I ordered an Area 419 self timing brake a few hours ago, but I kind of want to try one of these.

If you are going to suppress it, consider what mounting system you will be using. That may determine what you decide on for a brake.

I'm going with the Griffin taper mount system for 2 suppressors, so I have a bunch of rifles equipped for that. Given the rifles will get a muzzle device, I did put a short brake on a 223 AR, 223AI and 20 Practical. Basically zero recoil, easy to spot hits.

I run a brake on my 223. Using 40gr bullets at 3700’and 53gr bullets at 3400. It’s fantastic seeing crows and rabbits explode.

I have a Griffin Paladin 300.
My first one, but after last week I will probably have one more, it is in test phase/proto type and hopefully does everything thing as designed. Probably a year before testing is done.
My Paladin has been on 17’s to 30’s all with complete happiness.
Other than weight, diameter and length, for me and my purpose I have found no reason to limit myself with a 22RF or 5.56 rated tube. I have shot side by side with those and their smaller cans, saw zero arguable difference in noise reduction.

My Howa 1500 is a great rifle, no brake but I have a brake on my AR15 A2.

I have several of Ross brakes. They work well. He even chambered a barrel for me. I took a so so Remington 700 308 varmint barrel and had him rechamber and thread for a savage small shank. That thing went from a 1.25" grouping barrel to a 0.55" barrel. He threaded the end for his brake while he had it.

Most all of mine have brakes no matter what chambering. The .223 becomes a total pussycat when braked, the gun barely even quivers. Feels like a rimfire. Brakes just work, on paper you can see the hole happening. Brakes that I use have 3 step down chambers inside and are heavy. The components of this .223 action have been changed over the years, different stock/barrel/scope and now a 223AI, but you get the idea. IMG_0863.jpeg
